Some UI items do not scale with higher monitor DPI

Post by rakunavi »

=== UPDATE ===================================================================
The issue reported below has been resolved in Ver 10.4.0 build 388.
I appreciate all the hard work and efforts of the support and development team.
==============================================================================

Hello all,

When text is entered in a pop-up note for a comment, a text indicator icon appears in the upper right corner of the comment, but I have noticed that the icon size is set without any consideration of the monitor scaling setting. In environments with high resolution monitors and high scaling settings, the icons are small and difficult to see. As with the font size issue of "Page Size/Position" on Document Options Toolbar reported in a previous topic, there may be room for improvement.

  • When scaling ratio of monitor is set high, font size of "Page Size/Position" on Document Options Toolbar is too small
    viewtopic.php?t=40614
The figure below shows how the size of the comment text indicator changes when the monitor scaling is changed to 100%, 200%, and 300%. The image size has been adjusted so that the three actual sizes are the same, assuming actual usage scenarios. The red arrows and blue rectangles were added after capture for illustrative purposes. Even if the scaling is set to 200% or 300%, the gold and silver gear icon on "Options..." button is displayed at about the same size, but you can see that the text indicators are one-half and one-third smaller, respectively, than at 100%.

  • figure.png
Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

[EDIT]
The title of the topic has been changed as follows

  • Before : The size of the comment text indicator doesn't change with the scaling settings of the monitor and remains constant
  • After : Some UI items do not scale with higher monitor DPI
Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello rakunavi,

I believe this is due to a requirement of the PDF specification itself:
image.png
However I will check with our developers whether screen scaling should still act in the same way - and let you know once I've heard their feedback!

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello Stefan, thank you for your investigation.

I am surprised that such an interpretation is possible. I would be very interested to hear the developer's opinion. By the way, Adobe's interpretation is the same as mine.

  • figure.png
If Stephan's interpretation is correct, the Text Indicator will eventually become too small to see as future technological advances continue to increase monitor resolution.

Please give my best regards to the developer.

Thank you, Daniel, for creating the ticket!

I hope this topic will bring the "Page Size/Position" font size issue mentioned above to the attention of developers once again.

If the font size when Monitor scaling is 100% is 100, the font size when Monitor scaling is 200% is 69.07, and the font size when Monitor scaling is 300% is 64.54. Ideally, they should all be the same 100. Especially when Monitor Scaling is changed from 100% to 200%, the decrease in font size is particularly large. The various icons are kept at about the same size, but only the text is small. At this size, it is a little inconvenient to read the text unless I move my eyes a little closer to the screen.

Please give my best regards to the developers.

Hello, rakunavi

That one was assigned a Developer and work item number recently, however, this area is overloaded with tasks at the moment, both feature requests and relatively minor visual bugs, so I cannot promise a timeline or a high priority.

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

Regarding the page shadows and the page gaps, I noticed that the scaling of the monitor is not taken into account and their lengths are fixed values regardless of the change in scaling.

  • figure.png
It would be ideal to keep the appearance almost the same as the resolution of the monitor increases, if the scaling is increased accordingly. However, currently, the higher the resolution, the narrower the page gaps and the shorter the page shadows become in the actual display on the monitor. In other words, even if a UI developer designs the gaps and shadow length assuming a scaling value of 100%, if the user sets a different scaling value, the developer's intention will not be reflected in the screen that the user actually sees.

Below are captured images and a movie of them together for the following three combinations of monitor resolution and scaling.

  • Resolution: 1280 x 720, Scaling: 100%
  • Resolution: 2560 x 1440, Scaling: 200%
  • Resolution: 3840 x 2160, Scaling: 300%

    FullScreen_2560x1440_Scaling200.png

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Hello Daniel, thank you for contacting developers.

When you set up a date field on a form, you see a gray vertical bar on the right side, but I noticed that the scaling of the monitor is not taken into account and the width is a fixed value regardless of any scaling changes. I report it here because it is relevant to what I have reported so far.

  • datefield.png
Below are captured images for the following three combinations of monitor resolution and scaling.

  • Resolution: 1280 x 720, Scaling: 100%
  • Resolution: 2560 x 1440, Scaling: 200%
  • Resolution: 3840 x 2160, Scaling: 300%
The left side of the screen shows the result of PDF-XChange Editor and the right side of the screen shows the result of Acrobat Reader. The zoom factor is set to 150% in all cases, whether in PDF-XChange Editor or Acrobat, and regardless of scaling.

For Acrobat, the width of the gray vertical bar is constant regardless of scaling, whereas in PDF-XChange Editor, you should see the width of the bar narrowing as the scaling increases.

=== UPDATE ===================================================================
The issue reported below has been resolved in Ver 10.6.0 build 396.
I appreciate all the hard work and efforts of the support and development team.
==============================================================================

Hello Daniel, thank you for creating the ticket!

In the Customize Snapping dialog, I noticed that for each "Snap to" icon for objects, the display scaling is not taken into account.

The following figure shows how the size of the icons in the dialog changes when the display scaling is set to 100%, 200%, or 300%. Although the pixel size of the original image will vary, the final display size of the dialog will be adjusted to be the same, assuming that the image will be displayed on a display with a higher DPI for larger scaling values.

  • figure.png
It is also similar to what I previously pointed out in the following topic.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.

Hello rakunavi,

I've asked our UI devs to take a look and I will make the ticket for those icons if they ask me to (sometimes things are quick to fix, so we could go without one from time to time).
As usual - I will post an update here as soon as it becomes available.

Hello Stefan, thank you for contacting developers.

I noticed that the rightmost bar on the toolbar for folding and the downward pointing >> symbol that shows the continuation when the command icon is omitted are also displayed smaller than necessary as the scaling increases. The following video shows how, after changing to the Classic toolbar and floating the bookmark pane, it is moved to the upper right corner of the window to make it easier to compare elements in each window.

  • Animation.gif
The following figure shows how the window components change in size when the display scaling is set to 100%, 200%, and 300%, as before. Although the pixel size of the original image is different, the final display size is adjusted to be the same, assuming that the larger scaling value will be displayed on a display with a higher DPI.

  • figure.png
Compare the width of the bar circled in yellow with the width of the bar circled in red and the size of the >> symbol: at 100% they are almost identical, but at 200% and 300% the latter is a bit smaller, don't you think?

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

rakunavi

Hello Stefan, thank you for creating the ticket!

I found that the Delete button from history, which is placed at the right end of each item in the file history, is also too small due to the scaling effect. The following figures are created in exactly the same format as I have reported so far.

  • figure_recents.png

    figure_list.png
Comparing the three, it is interesting to note that the button appears to be the smallest at 200% rather than 300%. It does not seem to be simply that the higher the scaling, the smaller the actual size.

rakunavi

Hello, rakunavi

Just to keep all of these reports contained in one area, I have created a parent ticket for us to connect new issues on this (And got permission from the Dev team to directly make tickets in this area without direct communication from them in the future).
This ticket is mostly for admin purposes, but I am including it here so I don't forget.
  • RT#7427: Parent ticket:: UI Scaling issues
The previous three tickets in this thread have been attached (and I believe the other item was resolved without a ticket)
Following that, here is a new ticket for the latest report:

Post by rakunavi »

Hello Daniel, thank you for creating the ticket!

I noticed that gridlines and guidelines also have scaling issues. The verification screen shot below compares three scaling options (100%, 200%, and 300%), following the usual reporting format in this topic, with the gridline type set to the most spaced dotted lines. For comparison, a rectangular comment, text field, and link with the linetype set to "Dashed (2 white, 2 black)" are shown side by side.

  • figure1.png

    figure2.png
  • sample.pdf
As usual, the icons in the gridline linetype drop-down list in the preferences dialog look strange, but it also seems odd that the spacing of the dotted gridlines changes with scaling. For each of the dotted lines for rectangular comments, text fields, and links, please make sure that the spacing of the dotted lines remains constant even if the scaling changes. I cannot confirm that this is the case with build 395 because of the problems reported in another topic regarding guidelines, but judging from the behavior in build 387, the same thing seems to be true for the guidelines.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

rakunavi
