Ignore finger touchscreen input on scrollbars

Post by Loki@99 »

Hi,

It's a feature request.

Issue
I often unintentionally click the scrollbar with my ring or pinky finger when annotating PDF with stylus at the very right edge of the screen in portrait orientation which cause page changing.

Solution
Ignore finger touchscreen input on scrollbars

Additional info
That feature is supported on Microsoft OneNote and Drawboard PDF

Totally agree with this - there's a couple of solutions, none of which PDF-xchange currently does which makes it impossible to use with a stylus:

1. Turn off scrollbars (I know it's possible with a command line but really that is a terrible solution because you can't just click on a PDF and open it).
2. Move the scrollbars to the left and top. (this was rejected by the devs, but really it should be possible to configure).
3. Ignore scrollbar touches from the touch screen.

Unfortunately none of these solutions are implemented right now in PDF-Xchange viewer so it makes it impossible to use with a stylus.

One more bit of feedback - the Exclusive button doesn't work in stylus mode - it still changes to select mode in the latest version (10.4.4) so you can't write over text you've written if you're trying to extend a line. Instead it moves the entire comment.

Hello, echan101

I can confidently say that the "Viewer" specifically, definitely will not be getting any of those changes, as it has been discontinued for over a decade now.
However the "Editor" is a different story.

I have once again pressed the Dev team on this, I do not believe that a ticket was made the last time this was discussed, so hopefully they are more receptive to the idea now.

Apologies, I meant "PDF Xchange Editor".

Also I just worked out that you have to first choose the pen tool, then click the Exclusive (crown) button - you can't just click the Exclusive button when in hand mode.

I'll start another thread with another suggestion about obeying a Windows setting about hiding scrollbars that is designed for touch screens.

Hmm
I understand the issue...
Luckily my palm rejection seems to be decent... it might be especially annoying if touching a part outside the scrollbar would scroll to a page far from the current page....

An option to hide the scrollbar, could that be a good workaround? I guess that would have to be hidden away as an optional command to have in the navigation pane for example... not enabled by default

Anyway, I disagree that touch input should be disabled by default. I use both my finger and stylus to scroll using the scrollbar. Especially if there are not too many pages in the document.

That feature isn't intended to disable the whole touch input on scrollbar but only areas above and below the scroll button which often cause unintentional page switch.

Yeah, hiding the scrollbar could be a good workaround if touch input is causing issues, especially for users who prefer using both the stylus and finger for scrolling. I agree, disabling touch by default might be too restrictive some people really like having the flexibility. I checked your wishlist too, looks solid. The AltGr/Ctrl+Alt issue is especially annoying! Hopefully, some of those features get added soon.

Hello, Hubeert

You will all be happy to hear that we do have a ticket regarding touch scroll handling. I cannot promise when this may happen, but does now include the options discussed above, so the dev team can evaluate which is the most viable for our software.

right... this might make more sense... howeeeveer it might be important to note if there are more than a hundred pages you might not be able to pick the exact line. I wish there was a minimum width of the slider... it gets reaaaally thin when there's a lot of pages.... (I guess this is up to the Windows operating system itself though... the slider seems to behave the same in all programs)

The screenshot you sent cleared things up

Actually I just tried it and tapping the touchbar doesn't even go to another page it just moves it up and down... why not just make the up/down arrows at the top and bottom larger and use those instead...

I guess it might depend on your PC's DPI settings

Hello, MedBooster

As usual, I cannot make any promises for how/when an implementation would happen. We will have to wait and see what the Devs come up with after all this input.

You can hide the scrollbar with one click by registering PDF-XChange Editor with a command line option in the Launch application in the Preferences dialog. If you assign a shortcut key to the Launch command (ID: cmd.launchExternalApp), you can hide the scrollbar with a single keystroke.

Of course, this is only a workaround, as there are numerous limitations, such as the file must already be saved as a file, and settings are not saved. Still, it is better than nothing. Using it in conjunction with other methods, such as adding a similar item to the context menu of the file explorer separately, may improve convenience, albeit slightly, overall.

what do you mean by the settings not being saved?

Are you not prompted to save unsaved files you have open if this relaunches PDF-XCE?

Thank you, I might use this even though the palm rejection is pretty good (on my PC, I don't know if PDF-XCE itself has any integrated palm rejection functionality, it seems that it doesn't... might be useful when you have windows side-by side , to not accidentally scroll,I tend to mostly use the mouse wheel or keyboard arrows to navigate through pages anyways...

Hello MedBooster, thank you for your comment.

Since there are no settings in the Preferences dialog etc., it is only possible to hide the scrollbars for a file that is opened with the option at that time. Files opened in other tabs will still show scrollbars, so if you want to hide them, you will need to set them each time you open the file. That is what I meant above.
MedBooster wrote: Sat Feb 15, 2025 12:15 pm

When you execute the launch command with the command option, you are not restarting the application, so even if the file is unsaved, the file will still be open and the scrollbar will just be hidden. The contents of the file will remain intact, so it is safe. However, if you have just created a new file and the location and file name have not yet been determined, the icon for the launch command with the "/A scrollbar=0" option will be grayed out and cannot be pressed. So, in order to hide the scrollbar, at the very least, the file must be saved at least once, since only the save location and file name need to be determined.

In any case, as you can see, it is just a very simple setup and should therefore be safe to use.

You can relax some of limitations in PDF-XChange Editor by specifying PDF-XChange Editor itself or a portable version of PDF-XChange Editor in the launch command, as shown here.

The fact that bugs are often found related to the "/A scrollbar=0" option (here and here) suggests that many users may not yet know how to do this. I hope that more users will hide the scrollbar, and that someday a dedicated configuration option will be added to the PDF-XChange Editor itself.

Best regards,
rakunavi

ooooh I thought the launch command would affect all open tabs. It's just the one tab (document) in question I guess....
