Unsupported digital signature type.

Post by Raindrops »

I am facing this problem in one of the files I downloaded from a High Court site.

Every time I try to save my changes, it pops up this error message:
Digital signature(s) verification problem

One or more errors happened during digital signature(s) verification.
Affected signature(s) will be marked as Unsupported.
This is irritating.

I tried to clear all signatures, but it produced this error:
An error occurred:
Error [PXVLib]: No permissions for this operation.
The signature pane shows this status:
Restrictions: Only Form Filling, Signing, Commenting and the Creation of Template Pages are allowed for this document
I have not violated this restriction: So far I have only inserted callouts, highlighted text, and drawn rectangles.

I have not signed the document, filled forms, or created a template page.
(In fact, I have not yet learned how to do all these things!)

The status is as follows:
Status: Signature is UNSUPPORTED.
Unsupported digital signature type.
The certificate has expired or is not yet valid.
The signing time is from the clock on the signer's computer.
Field: "Signature1" (invisible)
What should I do next?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Raindrops

Thank you for the report, I have split this post out from the original "PDF-XChange Viewer" topic you posted it in reply to, as the error you are seeing is not the same as what was shown there, and as the Viewer has been discontinued for ~14 years at this point.

If you are experiencing this issue in the Viewer, please download its successor, the Editor, and see if the same issue occurs there: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads

Assuming that the issue is still present in the Editor, we will need to see a copy of any document which reports this error. If you can reproduce the issue in a blank file, or one that contains only non-sensitive "test" data, that would be ideal and you can post it here. Please DO NOT attach the document to a forum post if it contains sensitive data, as these are public forums, and anyone can download attachments from this forum.

If you cannot reproduce this with a non-sensitive file, please email the document to us via Support@PDF-XChange.com with a link to this post.

Side note, the error message when trying to "clear all signatures" is expected, as you can only delete signatures which were placed by you, using certificates that are present in the windows certificate "system store". If it was placed by someone else, with a certificate that is not present on the current device, or with an external "certificate file", than removal is not possible.

Kind regards,

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for a rapid response!

I am indeed using Editor. I didn't realize that the old post was for Viewer. Sorry about that!

I am not facing this problem in any file except for this particular file. Probably because most files are not protected like this one.
In addition, this is the only file in my experience where the Editor looks for the time stamp from the author's computer!

I have emailed the file to you.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Raindrops

Thank you for passing that along, I am sorry for the delay here, Jordan informed me he was taking this case on, but I only just noticed now he never posted here to make note of it.

It does not seem we were able to fully resolve the issue in the meantime, but I believe Jordan has passed your sample securely to the Dev team for review. Hopefully we can add support for this certificate type in the future.

If anyone else encounters a signature with a message like this please email us with a copy of the document, :

Then we can have the Dev team investigate the possibility of adding support for that certificate type.

Kind regards,
