Slow printing on hp 4350

Post by kman »

Several PDF documents that are of a scanned image print extremely slow. There is 1minute pause between each page that prints.
This is on a hp 4350 capable of 52 pages/min. The same document opened in Adobe reader prints just fine to the same printer.
We are using PCL 6 and do not wish to change to ps.
This is using build 37.2
The same document however prints fine to hp laserjet 1012 using PDF-Xchange Viewer.

Can you say which DPIs used when you print on each of these printers ?

The hp 4350 is set to "FastRes 1200"
The hp 1012 is set to "600dpi"

I should mention this is a terminal services environment on windows 2003 server.
The workstation that the printer is connected to is a xp machine and is connected via usb.
Both printers are being used through the terminal services session.
I have also tried the hp 4350 as a shared network printer with the same results.

I tried printing the same document directly from the workstation that the printer is connected to with the same results.
Reduced the dpi to the lowest setting of 600dpi and again same results.

Any ideas on this? Seems to me there must be some kind of printing issue with PDF-XChange Viewer if Adobe reader prints fine.
If PDF-Xchange converts images to bmp before sending to printer, perhaps the converted resolution is higher than required or conversion should use jpg or tif.
Obviously I don't know how it is programmed, just trying to resolve my issue. How does adobe reader deal with images in a pdf.

Ok, I believe I am quite patient.
I have not received a response since last Wednesday.
We paid for 20 of the pro version, I would expect better response from support.
Please respond.

Can you send me any such document? I will try to detect where the problem is on all available printers here.
Having such document it will be possible to solve problem into the next build.

Sorry for long response, and thanks for your patience

Thanks Ivan,

I have attached problem document. I even tried to print this document through "cutepdf" virtual printer to create a new clean pdf document, but it still had issues. Strange.
I had to delete several pages in order to stay within your upload limit. I did however test printing again and had the same issue.

I can reproduce the trouble in Epson C2600N printer, but only with PS3 drivers. With non-PS driver printing speed is ok.
Each page of your document contains just one 1-bpp image which works as mask. For printing such image, PDF Viewer makes 8bpp paletted image with transparency, and looks like this causes troubles for some drivers.

I will check how to make a workarround for now while GDI+ still used.

I had a similar issue, which might have been due to incorrect permissions on the spooler folder but was more likely due to the firewall blocking the port. For printing over tcp/ip, I needed to add tcp port 9100 as an exception for the local subnet in Windows Firewall.

2 irv: this case isn't Viewer specific. The viewer doesn't communicate to the port directly - it uses Windows API for printing.

That's great Ivan,

I'm glad you were able to duplicate it. I googled 1bpp/8bpp and I can see that there are gdi challenges in regards to conversions.
I look forward to a work around solution.

Thanks

I've upgraded to the latest version 38.1, still having the same effect on these type of pdf's.
However if I check off "Print as Images", these pdf's print just fine.
Is there a way of auto detecting these types of pdf's and in turn auto selecting "Print as Images".
