Existing digital signature not visible on a XFA form document

Hi Support,

From what I can figure out by searching the forum, digitally signing an XFA PDF document is not supported: viewtopic.php?f=62&t=33399

I have an XFA document that is digitally signed and Adobe displays the signature. PDF-XChange Editor displays the field as if is not signed.

I do not need to sign it - but I would need the existing signature to be visible.

You are correct that signing XFA documents is still not supported, but we should be able to show existing signatures. Could I ask you to please email us with a copy of this document so that we can look into why it is not showing the signature here and develop a solution.

My apologies for the delay getting back to you. I have just replied to your email but wanted to post here as well for clarity to anyone else experiencing the same issue.
At the moment, signatures in XFA documents are unsupported, if a signature in an XFA document is visible, it is currently the exception. not the norm. We are working on properly supporting displaying these, but I cannot offer a timeline for when this might be possible.

Placing new signatures in XFA is still not possible, and it is not something I can offer even a remote timeline for, do expect this to be a long wait, if it is ever made available.
Viewing existing signatures however we have made much progress on, and works without issue quite frequently. There are still exceptions, and if you do find an XFA document which is signed and does not display a signature in the Editor, please send it to us via email, so that we can investigate more closely and try to resolve that issue.

I have a file that the digital signature can NOT be seen. I have confirmed with others that the signature(s) are there.

Hi WQM,

thanks for the sample. I also can not see a visual representation of the signatures in our Editor while I can in Adobe Reader.

I have passed tis on to the development Team and added it to the existing ticket for the issue. I was told not to expect this fix int he very next build but a subsequent one.

For reference, the ticket is RT#5451: XFA, signatures not shown - though it is only for internal use, referring to it will mean any support staff member can get a status update.

the ticket is still set to the status "Open" which means it is actively being worked on but has not been resolved yet. I have raised the priority of the ticket and made mention that you are asking about it's progress.

I am afraid not. It is not trivial and while important it is not the top of the list for priority at this juncture I am afraid.

More time is required. I have made a note that you are asking about the progress. I cannot promise however that this will become the top priority. We will just have to wait and see I am afraid.

It has been over a year since the last post. Has there been any updates on this issue? We recently decided to adopt PDF-Xchange as our company's primary pdf application, but our primary customers have multiple forms with XFA. Unfortunately, we discovered this issue late and if the resolution is still not priority, we may have to reverse course and dump the licenses we have already purchased.

I do indeed have some news, The dev team has made good progress on this, and pending further internal testing, we hope to be able to offer not only XFA signature visibility, but also signing of empty signature fields in XFA documents, hoepfully in one of next few "Feature" updates (10.X.0.bbb).
I cannot promise that this will be ready in time for the next release specifically, but it should be coming "soon".

(For any prospective SDK users reading this in the future, I cannot speak to the availability of this in SDK products, at this time).

Unfortunately, I was a bit too confident in my previous post, and XFA handling has proven to be much more complex than we had hoped. The original hope was to have them in before the end of the 2024, but that goal has been pushed back considerably since my last post. At this point, it is unclear how much longer it will take.

A search of the forum indicates that the inability to digitally sign XFA forms has been ongoing since at least 2017. I love PDF-xchange Editor Plus, but this missing feature has been a significant issue for my company. Alternative PDF editors have had this feature since at least 2019. If not an exact ETA, do you have a rough estimate? This summer, Q4 2025, next year, next couple of years, never?

Our devs are preparing a new build for release in the next few days, however it does not seem like Signing XFA forms is included in that. As far as I am aware they are looking for ways to achieve that and be able to do it properly, however it is something that we can not yet offer.

I believe that the two are related, and as soon as existing ones can be shown we would be able to sign empty XFA signature fields as well.
So it is still a work in progress both on displaying and adding new ones.
