In Japanese "Edit Action List" dialog, item name and value are wrongly separated or there is an extra colon at the end

Hello all,

In preparing this post, I was comparing the English and Japanese versions of the 'Edit Action List' dialog and noticed an interesting difference. As you can see by comparing the dialogs in each language, the boundary separating the names in the left column from the values in the right column is in an odd position only when language is set to Japanese. In addition, some items have unnecessarily ended with a colon(:).

Wrong separation

• When the language is set to English, the 'Filename' setting is displayed in the following two parts, left (displayed in gray text) and right (displayed in black text).

  • C:\Program Files(x86)\PDFXEdit_Portable\PDFXEdit.exe
  However, when the language is set to Japanese, it is displayed separately as follows.
  
  
  • ファイル名：C:
  • \Program Files(x86)\PDFXEdit_Portable\PDFXEdit.exe
  The exact same is true for the 'Parameters' setting.

An extra colon at the end

• When the language is set to English, the 'Operation' setting is displayed in the following two parts, left and right.
  
  
  • Operation:
  • open
  However, when the language is set to Japanese, it is displayed separately as follows. The item name and value are all displayed together on the left column, and the right column is blank. Also note an extra colon (:) at the end of the left column for some reason.

The issue of the wrong separation or an extra colon at the end occurs in the majority of items. In the example below, the page number and zoom factor lines are incorrect.

This is only a display issue and does not affect other operations.

I have checked all languages supported by PDF-XChange Editor, and this issue only occurs when the language is set to Japanese.I'm posting this in this forum because I can't determine if it can be fixed by just modifying the language file or if the program itself needs to be modified.

Thanks for pointing that out! I believe this is related to the localization/translation into Japanese so I've passed this to a colleague who works with the translators and we will see if we can get this updated!

Hello Stefan, thank you for your investigation.

From my observation, the current program uses ':' (Unicode codepoint: U+003A) as a marker to set the left/right column separation. Therefore, if you use '：' (Unicode codepoint: U+FF1A) instead of ':' as a colon in a language file like Japanese, it will be displayed with unexpected deviation as in this case. Also, it seems that the program is implicitly written on the assumption that there is only one ':' at the end of the item name in the language file.

If you have chosen to address this issue by modifying the language file, it might be a good idea to notify the translator of the following points, at least for items related to the Edit Action List, to prevent similar issues from occurring not only in Japanese but also in other languages in the future.

• Always use ':' (Unicode codepoint: U+003A) as a colon.
• Use only one ':' (Unicode codepoint: U+003A) at the end.

You are probably well aware of this already, but here it is for your reference.

The problem reported in this topic still persists in build 396.

For reference, in Strings.en-JP.xcl, replacing '：' (Unicode codepoint: U+FF1A) with ':' (Unicode codepoint: U+003A) for items that may be related to the Edit Action List, the vertical lines align as shown on the right side of the following figure.

It may be sufficient to simply replace '：'(U+FF1A) in Strings.ja-JP.xcl with ':'(U+003A) at once, but since this may have something to do with the overall layout, please consult with the translator for details. In any case, replacing '：' (U+FF1A) with ':' (U+003A) for the following items related to the "Edit Action List" dialog results in the above figure.

Thanks for the clear report and suggestions.

There might be another solution that may prevent this problem from occuring forever and for any language/translation. Instead of using existing problematic strings we may add new strings that contain only 'pure' labels, without ':', '%1', '%2' etc. Just:
Page
Zoom
Rectangle
Command
View
Annotation
...

and then in runtime we will safely build the proper display string without any 'heuristics'...
yes, it will be necessary for translators to localize them but I think it's worth..
