Base content item can't be moved continuously by keystrokes with edit mode enabled immediately after opening a file

Hello all,

When you activate edit mode immediately after opening a file and try to move the position with the cursor keys after selecting a base content item, the focus is lost after the first keystroke and the second and subsequent keystrokes are reflected as page movement. This issue occurs only at the beginning. After that, it is possible to move the base content continuously by keystrokes.

In the verification, a sample file with the following four types of objects is used. After selecting each object, press the down arrow key five times to move its position.

• Comment text
• Stamp
• Base content text
• Base content image

The nudge setting was pre-set at 10.0 pt to the normal value to make the effect easy to understand. In addition, multiple copies of the sample file were copied in advance and opened simultaneously in tabs, eliminating the need to reopen the files during verification.

The following is the verification procedure. The procedure that is causing the issue is indicated in blue text. The corresponding timecode in the video is also included. ([MM:SS] "MM" shows minutes, and "SS" shows seconds.)

• Comment text
  [00:04] Activate the comment selection tool and select the comment text.
  [00:06] Press the down arrow key five times to confirm that the object moves normally.

• Stamp
  [00:11]-[00:19] Verification for stamp yields exactly the same results as for comment text.

• Base content text
  [00:19] Switch to the tab, activate the edit mode, and select the base content text.
  [00:23] As above, press the down arrow key five times, but immediately after pressing the first one, check that the object is deselected as soon as it is moved.
  [00:24] Then continue to press the down arrow key four times, which is interpreted as a page move, so that the fifth page is finally displayed.

• Base content image
  [00:28]-[00:37] Verification for base content image yields exactly the same results as for base content text.

• Base content text
  [00:37] Switch tabs, go to page 1, and select the base content text. Press the down arrow key five times to confirm the object moves correctly.

• Base content image
  [00:47]-[00:54] Verification for base content image yields exactly the same results as for base content text.

The problem reported in this topic is still occurring as of build 396. I have no new information, but it has already been two years since @David.P first reported it.

I am concerned that this is a reasonably important issue that affects usability and has not been improved at all. Perhaps the details of the problems users are experiencing are not being properly communicated to the development team. Therefore, I would like to explain specifically in what situations users may experience inconvenience by showing the process of editing the figures shown in the most recent feature request.

• In Thumbnails pane, it might be more intuitive if the thumbnail size changed at an accelerating rate instead of linearly

Imagine using the cursor keys to adjust the position of the 1st to 50th images in the following figure so that they are aligned with the guide line.

In the following video, after activating the Edit Object mode, the following operations are repeated for each image

1. Click on an image to select it.
2. Press the right cursor key just once to move the image slightly to the right.
3. The image is automatically deselected, so click on the image again to select it.
4. Press the right cursor key multiple times to move to the final desired position.

  The capture software used (ScreenToGif) displays a yellow circle around the mouse cursor when the left mouse button is clicked.

Pressing the right cursor key in Step 2 immediately deselects the image in Step 3, so it is very cumbersome to have to click the image again each time in Step 4 to select it and press the cursor key again. However, it is important to note that unless you do this, it will result in a different behavior, as explained in the two-year-old report at the beginning of this topic.

This is especially depressing if you have a large number of objects that you want to move with the cursor, as in this case. Currently, as shown in the following movie, if you select all the objects you want to move in advance, press the cursor key once to move them slightly, and then repeat the selection and movement one by one, the Step 3 operation in the above procedure will be unnecessary, saving you time and effort. However, I personally do not believe that this is the operating procedure intended by the developer.

If you actually operate on the sample file, you will understand the significant impact of this issue on operability.

I too have encountered this issue. Very frustrating. I meant to report it as a bug, but David P and Rakunavi beat me to it (by a couple of years!). Which, by the way, it is a little disconcerting that this has not been fixed for two years. Maybe the ticket got lost or maybe fixing it requires refactoring the entire PDF-XChange code base (I'm joking about the last one because I really hope it's not true).

It does seem like the initial reports were lost in transit, I do not see a ticket that was made for this issue at the time, or anything similar within a few months following the first report and my promise to David that I had passed it along to the Dev team. Sadly, the truth is we do have days when the backlog gets too large, and a few reports may fall through the cracks...

In the future, if I ever say "I passed this along" or something to that effect, and have not come back to edit in a ticket, or followup within 30 days of that, please feel free quote me there asking for an update. We see hundreds of posts each month, and according to reports, I am usually about 20% of them, which... makes it very hard for me to proactively keep track of everything I am sending to the Devs.
Thankfully, we have a new internal chat system, which is a godsend for me. The longer we use it, the more useful I find it; it is so much easier for me to locate my older messages (since Feb 2025 at least) and any Devs replies relating to the forums. I am now trying to always come back and edit my posts when I've been told to made a ticket or that an item was rejected, but I can sometimes miss that followup on a busy day.

In any case, in the time it took me to write this, Ivan has come back to confirm that he will try to get this fixed for the next release (397). I am waiting to hear if a ticket is needed, but will return to add that if I do end up making one.
