[suggestion] Add the ability to enable additional links highlighting

Post by Jensen Head »

Currently, if an object has a link assigned, it only becomes visible when you hover over the object. This link is also displayed in the Links pane, but without an exact indication of where on the page it is located. I understand that this is primarily a problem for the document layout designer, but if there was an option to always highlight links in a user-selected color (glow effect or highlighter), I would almost always keep this setting enabled.

Hello Jensen Head,

If you turn on the "Add.Edut Links" tool - that will highlight links on your pages with their positions shown as well:

There's no toggle to "visualize links" though, as if the designer of the file wanted a link to be visible - they have tools to change it's appearance, and as such us overriding those is not something that is available.

Kind regards,
Stefan

The designer of the original scanned document might have died before the word "hyperlink" was invented. I preferred that the pages of the digitized edition be visually indistinguishable from the original design. But I also had the option of highlighting all links in the document (with any tool active) that might lead to web pages with definitions of terms or online bibliographic references.

If we follow the principle of "seeing some objects in a document only in the editing mode of objects of this type", then we have many other objects that can also be made visible only in the editing mode, but not in the viewing mode. I cannot say what is objectively and certainly more important: comments, form fields, text, images, path items, and bookmark and link targets. But we must adhere to the idea of uniformity of approach =)

Also, the designer of the file may want the document to be displayed in certain colors, but you give the user the ability to override this setting in the Accessibility settings tab (or a button on the custom toolbar, and that's great!). Apart from the settings for displaying thin lines, Default View (which forces you to ignore the document designer's instructions to use a specific Initial View), script execution, etc. I don't quite understand how this setting for changing the document display differs fundamentally from the other document display settings that are already implemented in PDF-XChange Editor?

Hello Jensen Head,

Links are a special type of object, and normally having them "transparent" is the desired 'appearance' while the other types you mentioned (form fields, annotations, base content shapes etc) are intended to be visible.
Hence why links are handled differently in the way they are displayed.
Also - if a link has had a display apperance added - we will honour that.
You are asking us to force an override for a specific type of object in the PDF structure.

I will still ask our devs on their thoughts on this request, however I can not make any promises.

Kind regards,
Stefan
