Re-Size Page Backgrounds - Alternate Color

Post by shade-cabin-hammock »

Hi,

I've got a LONG document the pages of which I'd like to resize.

Thing is, they all have a dark blue background:

When I re-size the files they all re-size correctly, but they append the new area with a white background.

Is there any way I can generate the re-sized pages with a unique / user-defined color?

Or, barring that, any way to APPLY a background to the newly-sized pages - either JUST to the extra space I applied? Or, to each entire page (without blocking out the text?

Sincerely,

SCH

So from the user's perspective, the page background, even if it is a solid color, should be treated as a bitmap image the size of the page. Right? Could the development team consider adding a "Scale Background only" hack that would increase the size of the background image-color when the page size is increased without scaling the content / deskew? Or, alternatively, add a checkbox to "replace the current background fill with a new one of the same color". Or "fill new areas with the same color as the current page fill color, if any". Or something else that would make it easier to edit the background of the new page size, given the complexity of such.

Hello, Jensen Head

If the content in question was specifically created as a "background" object, than adjusting its size independently from the rest of the content (whether it is a raster image, inserted pdf, or the default "color" (Vector rectangle/shape) object), should be as simple as clicking "background > manage > edit > okay".

This is the same process you would need to use if you insert any pages into the document and want a uniform background for those new pages added. Note that in those cases, the "use page range of the current pagemark" should be unchecked for those action, and "all" pages, or the manually needed range, should be defined once again.

If the background you have is not one setup as a "background" according to the PDF specification, than such a feature would be impossible without some highly specialized tech (Something OCR adjacent) to separate the concept of background from foreground, which could be difficult in file that are image heavy files and pretty well any other file which OCR struggles with. Keep in mind that low contrast backgrounds are inherently problematic for OCR (and related) engines.

I am sorry to say that such a checkbox is not likely to come to the Resize pages dlg itself, as the cases where a proper "background" object has been used is surprisingly rare, and as such, it would cause more confusion and aggravation overall, than convenience for the small handful of users with properly manipulated documents.

Kind regards,

It might be noted that if the user deletes content in a region of a page where a background color had been added, that region will lose its background. It is similar to the example above except that the nude region is interior rather than exterior to the background area. And I acknowledge that this can be fixed by editting as above, but I just tend to add it again the way it was added in the first place. I don't see any downside to doing that rather than with the edit feature.
