New Tool + Folder Monitor

Post by jelederer »

Good afternoon,

I have successfully created a tool that merges several files, resizes them and names the result based on the folder name containing the original files. Running the tool is okay for only a couple instances but I would love to use the Folder Monitor feature to speed up the process. I have been able to get it up and running, testing with unmodified tools but I am unable to make it as effective as I would like. To get my tool to work with the Folder Monitor feature, I must enable the "monitor sub folders" option. Now, if I drag one folder at a time, my tool (via folder monitor) works as expected. If I drag multiple folders at once, it does not. For example, if I drag 4 folders to the monitor, then, instead of having four new files result, I only get 1 giant file with a name based on the first folder that was processed. I am hoping there is an option or a detail that I'm missing that would enable the dragging and expected processing of files with this custom tool that I have created. Please let me know what further information is needed from me to help figure this out.

Thank you!

Hello, jelederer

If you are dragging and dropping the folders directly onto the tool in question, it is expected that they are all processed at once. Similarly, the folder monitor will run on a periodic interval, if you have "process subfolders" enabled, and multiple exist, the tool will process all files in both subfolders at once.

Generally speaking, for this reason, any tools involving file "combination" actions should generally not be handled by a folder monitor, since they will encounter issues like this. Processing multiple input folders at the same time, will result in all of those files being processed together, and the output being merged into one.

Ah, that's what I expected to hear, unfortunately. The final automation is so close to saving me significant time! In the end, it is an inconvenience for larger projects, but the other aspects already make my file manipulation process far more manageable.
