about "XF" label

Post by cocopya »

Does the "XF" label that sometimes appears when you select an object mean that it is a group? If so, is there a way to ungroup it?
Thank you in advance.

Hello, cocopya

An "Xform" is a type of container in which a selection of base content can be placed, in practice it is not much different from how the "page" is a container that holds all the visible content. It does not inherently mean the content items are connected to one another, but it does allow for some data compression if there is repetition of the same Xform later on in the document.

A good example of this is static "Stamp" comments, which are all an Xform filled with a bundle of static base content, raised into the comment level. When you have multiple of the same stamp placed, they will all use the same Xform, and in turn, only one "instance" of the stamp data needs to exist in the document (opposed to having a unique copy for each time it has been used).

It is uncommon for that particular aspect of Xforms to be used in base content, but it is technically possible. In the end though, this does not have a relation to content "grouping", it is moreso akin to a "mirror" function, if that helps to clarify things.
Technically groups don't really exist in PDF, and while there are ways to "fake it", they are neither easy not the most reliable at this time. We are looking at grouping features for the future, but it is a long term project.
