Copying image from base content PDF-XCE issues, "solution"

Post by MedBooster »

Often when I try to copy images from base content of PDFs I get an unreadable file in my Ditto clipboard program (in Windows' clipboard manager Win11 it looks normal, but can't be pasted into other programs)

HOWEVER,
when I right click and open in the win11 images program, I am suddenly able to copy it and paste it into some other program?

Why is that?

Why not allow it to be copied directly from the base content?

Hello, MedBooster

Some other programs may not support the image format which we copy, but the majority of standard applications should. In testing, I can paste into Word, Paint, web browsers, and Chat services like Teams and Discord without issue, immediately after using Ctrl_C to copy content.

I do not know why there would be any difference between Ctrl_C and right click > copy though... to my knowledge, these should be identical. I will need to investigate that further and ask the dev team what their thoughts are.

Hello, Medbooster,

We still cannot seem to reproduce the issue, could I ask for a copy of a document in which this issue occurs?

I'm actually a bit confused myself....

using Ditto (3rd party clipboard manager) I am getting a CF_DIB file, but I am not getting the image,
but using the Windows 11 clipboard manager I am more reliably getting the image file copied successfully... *more often? but not always?

Maybe it depends whether the initial "image" is a png, or a scan from a printer for example?

Maybe it's a matter of using or not using the right selection tool? Should you or should you not use any tool when copying an image base content to another program?

PS: what about images that are "comments/annotations" are you supposed to be able to copy them over to other programs just as easily? What tool to specifically use when your goal is to copy over the image (either base content or annotation) to other programs on Windows 11/10).

I am using "All"

image.png

can't share the current document but I'll get back to the thread if I can reproduce something in a document/page I can share.

Hello, MedBooster

Comments would be copied in an internal format and should not be able to be pasted to external applications. Base content images should be presented in their existent image format, regardless of the tool used. In certain cases, some images may contain some xform data, as base content is wont to do. In those cases, I believe we usually supply the clipboard with more than one set of data, so it should be up to the pasting application to choose the correct (for example) PNG image file, instead of the xform data container.

Using third party clipboard tools can interfere with such operations however, so I cannot say with certainty what else you might experience there. If any issues come up, it is generally best to revert to using the standard windows tools, and removing third party influence, to ensure that no custom settings and such are impacting our functions.
