Save Paper/Nesting Feature

Post by Eymann »

Hello together,

I intensively use PDF-XChange Editor and the PDF-XChange Printer with my Canon large-format printer (TX 4100) for plotting long, narrow plans.

My problem: The current 'Insert Pages' function in the Editor is unsuitable for material-saving nesting. It does not allow free placement to intelligently arrange multiple plans on a roll width. My current workflow is cumbersome (involving multiple steps of merging PDFs).

Feature Request:
Would it be possible to implement a true 'Save Paper' or nesting function?

Ideally in the PDF-XChange Printer: A print preview where all 'printed' pages are collected and can be freely arranged via drag & drop on a user-defined page size (roll dimensions). Optionally with an automatic nesting algorithm.

Alternatively in the Editor: An enhanced 'Insert Pages' function that provides a freely customizable grid or canvas.

From a user's perspective, integration into the PDF-XChange Printer would be the most significant benefit, as it would greatly streamline the workflow. There would be no need to create temporary PDFs anymore.

Best regards from a paying customer who really likes your product and would love to use it even more efficiently!

Hi Eymann,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid this is quite a niche feature request and unlikely to be used by enough users to justify being added to the software. However, there are certainly "workarounds" you can use to resolve the issue and make your workflow more efficient. For example, you can open the documents before they are merged and manually remove the pages that you don't want to be in the output document. Or, if they are simply empty pages, you can use the "Delete Empty Pages" feature to remove them. Please have a try with those options and see how you get on.

Hello Sean

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
Yes, you are correct. And yes, it is of course rather rare for users to have cases like mine.

My workaround for my print screen example, which consists of three engineering plans, is as follows:
Plan A 305 mm x 2100 mm
Plan B 305 mm x 1050 mm
Plan C 305 mm x 1050 mm

Target after merging = 610 mm x 2100 mm

However, I had to do it in two steps. :)

Step 1
Merge plans B + C --> 305 mm x 2100 mm

Step 2
Merge plan A with plans B-C --> 610 mm x 2100 mm

It would be nice to do everything in one step.

And I'm not sure if I'm in the right place for this, but you could also do this in PDF XChange Editor under Organise --> Merge Pages.

Kind regards

Hi Eymann,

Thanks for the explanation/clarification - but I'm afraid there is no faster way to do this than what you're already doing.
