I just installed Adobe Reader 9.0 to see how it compares to PDF-XChange.
The first thing I noticed was some blurring of the text when zooming or using the loupe tool and navigation window.
The second thing was that the read aloud feature just come up with "Blank," "Blank," "Blank." Not much use at all. Overall, the first impression is of something unpolished — like beta software.
Then I search all over for Commenting and Markup tools. Eventually I found them, but they were disabled for my documents, which the documents security properties tell me that Commenting and Document Assembly are "Not Allowed."
No such problem in PDF-XChange — they are my own documents produced from OpenOffice Writer or PagePlus and no security protection was set.
I noticed that the menu to open files from PDF-XChange no longer includes Adobe Reader 7, which seems to have been uninstalled without any warning and without me requesting it. Not that version 9 is bad — it has some nice features — but there are some things I prefer about the earlier version.
The last thing I noticed before it crashed, was a popup progress dialogue doing something when I tried to read a document. I will try it for a few more days, but I think I shall need to do a System Restore to get rid of this 200 Mbytes of bloatware.

Re: Adobe Reader 9.0 Comparisons
I have tried Adobe Acrobat 9.0 (Pro Extended). It is a huge. And I also had the impression that it is very much a beta version, not a release.

Re: Adobe Reader 9.0 Comparisons
Well, I haven't had much time to use it yet, but I haven't found many problems with Adobe Reader 9 (not Acrobat) ...
Of course the absolutely huge advantage of XChange Viewer is that the free version allows adding annotations and a little editing. But compared to Adobe Reader, it lacks a few nice convenience and accessibility features, some of which are essential to me (but probably not to the majority of "average" users). It would be nice if XChange viewer got some of this polish to make it a real substitute for Adobe Reader. (I still need to have Adobe Reader installed, for such little but useful things as stemming and proper handling of ligatures during search, the ability to extract images at the original resolution, proper full-screen/presentation mode, the ability to programmatically close/open a viewer from another application (essential for TeX users), single-key accelerators, etc.)

The ligature search problem is on the todo list.
PDF-XChange can extract images at any resolution you like (up to 2400 dpi). Preferences, Snapshot tool.
Single key shortcuts are now possible. Right-click on a toolbar to customise. Right-click again on a tool, e.g. the Rectangle Tool, and select "Properties." There you can assign a shortcut as "r" or "Shift R." This does not intefere with text editing or the find feature. R will still type R when in the appropriate context.

Re: Adobe Reader 9.0 Comparisons
So two of these features are already (or will soon be) added
That sounds great!
Though extracting images at the image's original resolution is not the same as rescaling the image ...
Keep up the good work!
