While generating a Table of Content (TOC), how to avoid the twin Bookmarks for long titles splitted on 2 lines

Post by samz »

Hello,
While generating a Table of Content (TOC), how to avoid the twin Bookmarks for long titles splitted on 2 (or more) lines?

STEPS:
- Select the title "Introduction".
- Right click > Use Selected Text Style in Bookmark Generation...
- Keep Default settings in the popup "Bookmark Generation Properties". Press OK.
- TOC is generated with 9 Bookmarks in the attached PDF.

Problem: The long title on 2 lines "Quelques axiomes et les résultats qui en découlent" (page 47) generates 2 bookmarks: "Quelques axiomes et les" and "résultats qui en découlent".
Same problem with the title "Connexité et propriétés semblables"
Thank you and regards

Hello samz,

Please try the following settings.

  1. Enable the “Allow multiline bookmark titles” option.
  2. Enable the “Search and replace bookmark title with text patterns” option.
  3. Enter “\n” in the “Search for” field.
  4. Enable the “Use regular expressions” option.

Thank you for the clear explanations.
I will try after updating PDF xChange Edit Plus from 10.1.2 to ..., because I don't have the option USE REGULAR EXPRESSION.
What is your version?

Hello samz, thank you for your feedback.

The results I showed above are based on the latest version, Version 10.7.3 build 401. Upon checking the behavior in older builds, I found that the regular expression option was introduced from Version 10.5.0 build 393.

  • PDF-XChange Editor Version History - Build 10.5.0.393
NEW Added regex interpretation of bookmark text in the "Create Links from Bookmarks" dialog box. (T# 6728)
Also regex interpretation added to “Generate bookmarks from text” (“Title Formatting” and “Text Matching Options) and “Find and Replace” dialogs
As you mentioned, your Version 10.1.2 build 382 does not have the regular expression option. However, enabling both the “Remove duplicate spaces” and “Replace line breaks with spaces” options should achieve the result you desire. Please try the following settings:

  1. Enable the “Allow multiline bookmark titles” option.
  2. Enable the “Remove duplicate spaces” option.
  3. Enable the “Replace line breaks with spaces” option.

There is also the Merge Duplicates tool

that might be of use.
