How to split/merge a multi-page document

Post by msucro »

Hello,

I just downloaded the program yesterday so I'm a NEWBIE. I searched the topics but still don't know how to do it. I've opened a document and need to split it into individual pages (8.5x11). I'll also need to merge documents sometimes as well.

Thx, Marcus

Hello, msucro

I see you also sent an email, so I will copy the same details over here for others to see:

Before we begin, I should mention that if you are planning to "split" or "extract" pages from a document, and then repeatedly merge them back together, this is known to cause come file bloat, as there are some non-page content items, like bookmarks, layers, and named destinations, which are carried over during each step. We offer controls for each of these in the respective options dialogue windows that appear, but it is something to keep in mind, you will either be recursively duplicating some of these items (inflating your document size exponentially), or you will be losing the functionality that those features offer by stripping them from the document.

If this is simply a one off split, and you do not plan to merge the split pages back into the original, or any other files which contain/use pages from the original, than you can ignore this, and allow it to copy relevant items without issue.

To directly answer your questions both tools can be located on the "organize" tab:

1. Split document is located inside the "split" dropdown:

And its options should be fairly straightforward, but if you have questions when you see it, please do ask.

2. Merging can be done in a few ways. Either with the "insert pages" tool, under the "Insert" dropdown (also on the organize tab), or via drag/drop into the relevant thumbnails pane (you can also use copy/paste in that pane to do the same).

Alternatively, if you need to take multiple input files and quickly make a new document from all of them. Use the "File > New document > combine files" function, where you can choose multiple input documents, and organize them in the necessary order. As mentioned before, do check the "options" dialogue in that window to ensure that the special content handling is configured correctly.

Kind regards,

Hello Dan, thank you very much. I was using the 2nd option "split pages" and didn't see any US page sizes. Split document was perfect.

Hello, msucro

The "split pages" tool is for cutting the pages within the same document apart. EG, you have the document in a magazine format, and need to split every page vertically into 2 pages, turning your 50 page document, into a 100 page document instead.

The reason it would not offer something like, letter size, is because all of your pages are already that size of smaller. There is no reason to offer a page split size larger than the page you are splitting, as nothing would happen
