Create a non-contiguous section in Editor Plus

Post by mfgeng »

Hello,

Here is my system:
Editor Plus, Version 10.1.1, build 381 (Sept 18, 2023)
Windows 11 Enterprise

I wish to create a section involving a non-contiguous range.

I have PDF schematics that have hundreds of pages.

I've created hierarchical bookmarks based upon repair events and the specific schematic pages that were involved. The specific pages are almost always non-contiguous. I want a way to create a section within the existing document whereby one can print a section and consequently only print the pages that were bookmarked for the occasion.

Copilot left me running in circles, but I've concluded this cannot natively be done. Perhaps programmatically, but I have not researched that yet.

Appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Hello, mfgeng

It sounds like you have already configured your bookmark trees as needed, all you need to do in this scenario is use the "selection" methods we offer to select the pages in mind. If you need to select only a handful of bookmarks, use Ctrl+Click to select them individually. If you want to grab a whole section, select the first, then Shift+Click the last to quickly grab them all.
Then open the right click menu, and you should see the following option:

This will select the relevant page thumbnails in the thumbnail pane. Immediately after which, without clicking on anything else, use Ctrl+P to open the print dialogue (or use the extract pages tool, or whichever other function you need to apply to these specific pages) and Enable the "selected" page range that appears (in most cases, it should be active by default due to your existing selection when the menu was opened):

I hope this helps!

Kind regards,

Thanks Dan,

This method does not work for me.

Below are options that I have available after selecting non-contiguous bookmarks and I right click in the bookmarks pane.

When I select this non-contiguous range, the thumbnail pane highlights pages 5 - 32, not the non-contiguous, bookmarked pages 4, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17,......,32.

If I have to, for example, individually select a handful of pages (out of hundreds) from the thumbnail pane, then setting up hierarchical bookmarks won't help me at all. I would have to hunt and peck for pertinent pages in thumbnail pane which is time consuming and tedious.

My goal is to assign the parent "z-axis" bookmark (in this highlighted example) a range of 4, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17,......,32.

Hello mfgeng,

Excuse me for interrupting your conversation.

If I take what you've written literally, I would imagine the following behavior:

  • Animation.gif
  • sample.pdf
In that case, it appears that selections in the Thumbnails pane are properly made non-contiguously, which differs from what you are describing.

This is probably because I haven't fully grasped your argument. However, if you watch the video, I believe there must be a part where I have misunderstood something. If you could point that out, it might help convey the situation more accurately to the PDF-XChange support team. If possible, it would be better if you could provide a sample file.

Incidentally, the selection commands in the Bookmarks pane have been enhanced since build 396. I don't necessarily think the new feature in build 396 is required for what you want to do, but since the menu structure has changed somewhat, it might be good to know for future communication. For an introduction to the new feature, please refer to posts like this one.

Please forgive me if my comment is off the mark.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Perhaps Dan and rakunavi, and possibly I, are misunderstanding your challenge.

But I think there is a simple step that is being missed that achieves your objectives. After you have selected your non-contiguous pages in the Bookmarks panel, all you have to do is to go to the Thumbnails panel, open the Options context panel, select Pages that are Bookmark Targets, and then in the Print panel, select Selected, and click on Print.

Thank you, everyone.

I reread everyone's posts and discovered my error that Daniel and ravinaku alluded to.

After I created my hierarchal parent bookmark and selected the child bookmarks, I was executing "select" under <section> rather than <pages>.

I had become paradigmed into thinking that <section> commands would be necessary to select a non-contiguous range en masse.

Thanks again, everyone.
