Many fields, such as search term input field, can display history via dropdown lists. Typically, a “Clear” option is provided at the end of the dropdown list. When you hover the mouse cursor over the field and scroll down with the mouse wheel to reach the end of the list, a confirmation dialog box suddenly appears asking for permission to execute “Clear History”.
However, for users, the act of reviewing a field's input history and the act of clearing all history are clearly different in terms of their importance and use cases. When scrolling the mouse wheel up or down, most users should only expect the input history to appear.
When using the mouse wheel to navigate dropdown lists, it's common to scroll a bit more than necessary and then scroll back just a little bit. In such cases, when the user happens to scroll to the end of the dropdown list, a UI that suddenly displays a confirmation dialog to clear the history seems unsuitable for general users.
In the following verification video, first click the dropdown arrow in the search term input field of the Search pane to view the current history items. After closing the list, scrolling down several times with the mouse wheel suddenly triggers the history clearing confirmation dialog to appear.
