Links from Excel to a specific PDF page #3

Hi to all,

In my previous post, I was asking how to create a link in an Excel cell that opens a specific page in a PDF...and you helped me achieve that. Thank you again.

Now I’m dealing with another problem on the same topic. I have a PDF file whose name contains the # character, and PDF-XChange Editor refuses to open it. I’m assuming the issue is caused by the # in the file name, because # is also used in Excel hyperlinks as a special symbol for applying multiple/ampersand identifiers (section 3. Fragment Identifiers).

Is there a way to overcame the problem without changing file name with other characater hack?

I hope my explanation is clear.

Hi Elastik,

I'm afraid there is no obvious way to resolve that issue - the simplest workaround is simply to rename the PDF.

How about replacing any # characters in the filename with %23 using percent-encoding, then specifying it as the hyperlink address in Excel?

For example, if the filename is sample#999.pdf, you can specify it as follows.

• pxce:file:///C:/Users/user/Documents/sample%23999.pdf#page=3
  pxce:file:///C:/Users/user/Documents/sample%23999.pdf#nameddest=page_3
