[bug] If no actions are performed on an opened file, it is not saved

Post by Jensen Head »

I want to assign names from Titles to all input PDF files. To do this, I create a tool from two actions: Choose Input Files and Save Documents. In the second action, I specify the mask %[DocTitle] for Filename. Expected behavior: files are named (renamed) the same as their titles. Actual behavior: file names are not changed.

PDF-XChange Editor 10.6.0, build 396
Microsoft Windows 10.0.19045.5854

Upd. The expected result occurs when the %[DocInfo:Title] mask is selected. It is not at all obvious that this is exactly how it should be done.

Hello, Jensen Head

This one is an unfortunate side effect of a misnamed feature when this macro first came out. We cannot change the handling of the DocTitle macro (it pulls the filename), because many users may have created tools/systems which use it and those work as they need.

The DocInfo:Title option was later added to offer the function you are looking for, but sadly, the old one is not going to be changed. Perhaps one day it will be removed from the list, to reduce this confusion (I will check with the Dev team about that), but until then, both will co-exist for some time.

Hello,

Unfortunately it will not be changing for foreseeable future. As noted before, this is a core function that is used by many, and is quite likely a core component of the handling for numerous large and longstanding custom tools (especially for our corporate clients with thousands of documents being processed at high frequency.

Yes it is a bit confusing until you test it and see what it does, but it is not a big enough problem for new users to risk the level of widespread damage removing this could do for existing clients.
