Copy Bookmark to Multiple Pages

Post by tim_crouse »

Is there a way to copy a bookmark or a link (that is linked to the table of contents page) to multiple pages in the PDF?

Hello, tim_crouse

Bookmarks are not page objects, they all exist in a disconnected group from the page content, pointing to their designated location. While you can copy them to paste into other documents, you cannot copy/paste them in a way that would rename or adjust their target pages.

As for "link" objects, which ARE a page content item (technically a "comment") - those can most definitely be copied and pasted elsewhere in the document. Simply enable the "add/edit links" tool on the Home tab, then you can select the links on the current page and copy (Ctrl+C)/Paste (Ctrl+V) them as you would any other content type.

Hello tim_crouse,

As Daniel mentioned, due to their nature, bookmarks can only be copied as bookmarks within the Bookmarks pane. However, it is possible to reuse the information from an existing bookmark as the action (target destination) when creating a new link. Though, to be honest, the effort involved isn't much different from creating a link from scratch.

Once you have the link, simply enable the "Add/Edit Links" tool, select the link, and run the "Duplicate Annotations" command (found under the Home or Arrange tabs). By specifying the conditions in the "Duplicate Annotations" dialog, you can replicate the link across multiple pages. For example, if you enter a value for "Number of Duplicates" that is larger than the total page count, it will copy the link to all subsequent pages until the end of the document.

In the video below, I’m using a sample file that has only one bookmark to the Table of Contents and no existing links. I’ll demonstrate the process in two steps:

  1. Creating a link at the top-left of the page using the bookmark action.
  2. Enabling link editing mode and duplicating that link across multiple pages.

Please note that it may take some time for the changes to reflect in the Links pane after duplication (see this related topic), but the duplication process itself is already complete. You can proceed to the next step, such as saving the file, without waiting for the Links pane to catch up.
