Inserting Layers

Post by jeffberk »

I'm trying to create a multi-layer pdf so that I can overlay line drawings created in another program.
Specifically, I have drawings of circuits as an SVG files. I'd like the user to be able to view one or more of the circuits at a time because they get too confusing if all displayed at one time.
I can export the individual SVG files in pdf but I'm confused if there is a way to import each of these pdf's into separate layers created in PDF-XChange Editor Plus (Version 8.0, build 332.0).

Hi Jeff,

thanks for the post excellent suggestion. I call it a suggestion because we do not currently have a feature to allow you to add these files as layers, however we think we should.

To that end I have raised a formal Feature Request around this, and while internal to the company only, should you refer to RT#5012: Featyure Request :: Editor :: Add content as layer in the forum or an email to support@pdf-xchange.com then any support staff member can get you a status update.

I hope that helpless.
Best regards

This would be an absolute game-changer for technical drawings and circuit layouts. I often run into the same issue where a single page gets way too cluttered with markups. Really glad to see a formal feature request (RT#5012) was opened for this - it’s definitely one of those 'pro' features that would make the Editor even more powerful!

Probably this feature is already there ... (since build 9.0.350, Jan 14th 2021)

1) Activate the "Layers"-pane via the View-ribbon > Panes > Layers or via the vertical "Quick Tools"-ribbon at the left.

2) Click "Options..." in the toolbar of the "Layers"-pane

3) Click "Import as Layer" and see if you can do something with it

Kind regards.

Hello, Willy Van Nuffel

That would indeed be the functionality needed here. Do however keep in mind that in PDF, the concept of "layers" is different from most other formats.

Specifically, they have zero impact on content order/layering (its an entirely misnamed feature, but one we need to use for consistency with other software).
In reality, they are simply "optional content visibility groups" - or in short, a visibility toggle option for items related to that layer.
