[UX & Usability] Clearing the Margins fields in the Merge Pages window should set them to zero.

Post by Jensen Head »

Summary
͏
When deleting non-zero values in numeric fields, it's logical to expect them to be reset to zero. However, this isn't currently the case.
͏
Steps to Reproduce
͏
1. Open or create any document in PDF-XChange Editor
2. Open the Merge Pages dialog
3. Set focus to the Left field
4. Delete the current value (using the Delete or Backspace keys)
5. Press Tab
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the Right, Top, and Bottom fields
͏
Expected Behavior
͏
All fields display the value 0 mm.
͏
Actual Behavior
͏
The fields display the value that was present when the dialog was opened.
͏
Environment
͏
- OS: Microsoft Windows 10.0.26200.7840
- PDF-XChange Editor 10.8.1, build 406

Hi Jensen,

I'm afraid I cannot reproduce this - it works as expected when I follow your steps. Could you save your settings, then try resetting them and testing the issue again?

Hello Sean,

I agree with Jensen Head's assessment. Furthermore, this behavior is not limited to the "Merge Pages" dialog; it applies to almost all input fields within PDF-XChange Editor.

The attached video demonstrates this behavior in the "Crop Pages" dialog:

  1. I enter "10 pt" into each of the Left, Right, Top, and Bottom fields, using the Tab key to navigate between them.
  2. I then press Shift+Tab several times to move the focus back to the first field (Left).
  3. To clear the values to zero, I press Delete and then Tab, repeating this for all four fields. However, as soon as each field loses focus (the LostFocus event is triggered), the value reverts to "10 pt".
  4. Again, I use Shift+Tab to return the focus to the Left field.
  5. This time, I try to clear the values using Backspace and Tab for all four fields. Just as before, each field reverts to "10 pt" the moment it loses focus.

For reference, I have also included the behavior in Adobe Acrobat. As you can see, Acrobat resets the value to "0 pt" when the field loses focus. This is consistent with standard Windows application behavior and is likely what most users, including myself, would expect.

Hello, rakunavi and Jensen,

I see the same here, Delete/backspace + Tab seems to return the filed to the last entered value, instead of zero.

I will admit that I am personally unsure this is something we should change at this point - it would be a notable departure from the past, and requiring that you manually enter "0" to the field, ensures that if you mistakenly emptied the filed, you have a method to restore its value to the original.
I have nonetheless passed it along to the Dev team for consideration.

Hello, Jensen Head

Unfortunately it is not changing at this time. This happens because we currently interpret an empty value as invalid, and then correct it to the value which was before the user cleared it.
