language settings

Post by wannerlaufer »

Hi there
I am using PDF XChange on my computer directly and on an WTS (Windows Server 2019 Standard), I have recently upgraded PdF XChange, on both systems it's now Version 10.8.2, Build 407

On the WTS, the menus and commands are in English (mainly, the Menu "Lesezeichen" and the commands therein are in German), on the computer itself, Windows 11 Pro, everthing is German.

Not really a problem for me, but strange nonetheless, language settings are identical and before the upgrade, everything was in German, see attached screenshot.

Any ideas, is UI Language somewhat f***ed up on the WTS?

Hello wannerlaufer,

Our Editor will default to the English name of a command in any menu if the corresponding string in the localization file is missing/incomplete. So I suspect that there's an issue with the localization file on the server, and if you reinstall or update that - it should then behave the same as your Win 11 Installation.

Kind regards,
Stefan

that might be the case, but why did it work perfectly before the upgrade? and furthermore why this mixture of both English and German, the majority of commands and menus are in English but there is the odd exception like "Optimiert speichern" in the File Menu. "Formulare erkennen" in Form, there are other examples

Hello, wannerlaufer

I am afraid that the best I can suggest there is the same as stefan, for this to happen, there was an error in your instalation's language folder, or it is inaccessible.

Beyond that our languages are stored separately from the installation folder in a common folder so that we can reduce the size of our installation by sharing components between the Editor, Tools and printers. Depeneding on how your server is delivering the remote application, it could be that permission to that folder is not granted, or the software cannot reliably access it.

By Default all of our common files appear here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tracker Software\Common
Do ensure that all of these are accessible to all users - and that they are properly being updates with new releases.

Also, I note that on your end, the Dutch language "local name" is different from mine:

This could be another hint that conflicting files are present in this scenario and would explain why you see mostly English, despite the Dutch translation being nearly 100% complete.. - perhaps due to different versions of the software installed side by side?

Kind regards,

I will transfer this to the WTS Admin, thank you... just one thing:
what does Dutch have to do with it, I want it in German and... don't see any difference regarding Dutch in my and your installation

Hello, wannerlaufer

My apologies, that was a mistake on my part, I read the upper right "Deutsch" and immediately compared to the Dutch language (assuming that it was a windows repotting error), instead of making the connection to the German language... which you think I would have internalized by now, so I am sorry.

In any case, i do hope the reinstall and adjusting the permissions appropriately helps. If it does not, please ask you WTS Admin to email support@PDF-XChange.com to speak with our system admin specialist about the situation.

Re: language settings - in particular „GERMAN“

Post by daniel.kast@expertsuisse.ch »

Our company has the same problem after the last update.
We have installed PDF-XChange on close to 100 laptops.

After the last update, users have started to note that their UI has automatically changed to English.
And they‘re not able to change back to German - nothing happens to the UI.

Interestingly enough, it‘s possible to change to Afrikaans, but not German.
Unfortunately, changing to „Match System UI Language“ doesn‘t work either.

We use Manage Engine Endpoint Central to distribute PDF-XChange to our laptops, and have done so for more than 5 years. This past update has not been done any different from all the previous ones.

„Uninstall and Reinstall“ doesn‘t seem to be a solution when more than 2-3 uses are affected.
I do hope the next update will fix this issue - hopefully rather sooner than later.

is it possible to re-distribute the language file into the common folder? Assuming it‘s the same path on each installation, we could use a file transfer script as part of Manage Engine.

Hi, daniel.kast@expertsuisse.ch

thanks for the post. To my knowledge we have changed nothing here in the software and we are not seeing other similar reports.

Do you use "APP_LANG=de-DE" in the installer? https://help.pdf-xchange.com/pdfxe10/sw ... edpub.html
