Modifier keys to change increment steps for NumericUpDown controls (Mouse Wheel & Arrow Keys)

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

I have a suggestion to improve the usability of numeric input fields (NumericUpDown controls), such as those in the "Crop Pages" dialog.

Currently, when the unit is set to millimeters (mm), the increment is fixed at the minimum unit of 0.01 mm. While this is precise, it requires excessive scrolling or repeated key presses to make larger adjustments (e.g., moving 10 mm requires 1,000 steps).

I would like to request a feature where modifier keys change the increment steps, similar to many professional creative and CAD applications (and even older versions of Adobe Acrobat).

Proposed Behavior (Example):
  1. Mouse Wheel / Arrow Keys only: 1 mm increments (Standard adjustment)
  2. Shift + Wheel / Arrow Keys: 10 mm increments (Large adjustment)
  3. Ctrl + Shift + Wheel / Arrow Keys: 0.1 mm increments (Fine-tuning)
Why this is needed:
  • Gap between UI methods: Currently, dragging the crop box with a mouse is too coarse, but using the numeric field is too fine. There is no "middle ground" for efficient adjustment.
  • Workflow Efficiency: Implementing stepped increments based on modifier keys would significantly reduce the time spent on layout and margin adjustments.
The following video demonstrates how to adjust the margins in Acrobat X's "Crop Pages" feature using the Up and Down arrow keys while holding down the Shift key as needed. Unlike PDF-XChange Editor, Acrobat X does not support wheel-based adjustments. However, I think you’ll agree that being able to increase or decrease the margins in increments of 1 mm or 10 mm is much more user-friendly than having to adjust them in minute increments like 0.01 mm.

Since these controls only trigger when they have focus, there should be minimal conflict with global shortcuts.

I believe this enhancement would make the Editor even more powerful for professional users who require both speed and precision.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Best regards,
rakunavi
