No OCR Languages Available in Latest Version (10.8.5)

I ran into the common issue where no OCR languages are installed and read that the easiest fix was to pay for the extended maintenance license and just upgrade to the latest PDF-XChange build. This morning I uninstalled the build I had completely and then installed the latest build (10.8.5). Even after multiple reboots I still cannot use OCR, with no languages listed, even though I do indeed have languages installed.

I thought paying for and upgrading to the latest version would fix this issue, how can I resolve this?

Note: Uninstalling and reinstalling any languages for OCR does nothing and the registry fix from viewtopic.php?t=48198also doesn't work.

Enhanced OCR in 10.8.5 should indeed be working. Your approach is reasonable. Note that Enhanced OCR does require a PDF-XChange Editor Plus license.

Can you confirm that you:
  • Have an Editor Plus license (Do NOT post your license key here else we will be forced to block it)
  • As well as the reinstall, you restarted your PC.
  • Can see "Enhanced OCR" as an option in the preferences:

Thank you for the quick response. Yes I can confirm all three of those things.

I have restarted my PC multiple times since reinstalling.

My understanding is build 10.8.5 was released fairly recently, is it possible this is a bug in the new build?

Our Development team has actually seen a few reports of this issue recently, and reliably all of them have been caused by errors in Security software (most commonly "Sentinel One", but we cannot rule out various others). These are decidedly not bugs on our end, but an issue on the side of the security software.

Can I ask you to please temporarily try disabling your security software, then restart the Editor and let me know if OCR begins working there)
  • Following that, regardless of the results of the first test, please also try whitelisting these two folders in your security application, so it will not interfere with out software (then restart the PC):

    C:\Program Files\Tracker Software

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tracker Software

    Following that. I expect that the issue will no longer occur, please do let me know how it goes.
If the issue does persist after the above, we will need you to record Process monitor logs of the following executable:
  • C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Editor\PDFX.ProcessPool.Worker.x64.exe

    If you do record those, let me know and I will provide you with an upload link that you can send them to promptly.

Hi Daniel,

What a coincidence as Sentinel One is the antivirus my employer uses. I also have just been able to confirm that Bluebeam OCR is also broken on my PC. I will investigate and post here when I have an update.

We're affected by the same issue. I found a log file that seems to be related - it seems to be written when the OCR UI tries to build the language selector dropdown:

3356 :Cannot load DLL C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tracker Software\Common\ABBYY\Bin64\Protection.dll.
Eine DLL-Initialisierungsroutine ist fehlgeschlagen.
The second line means "A DLL initialisation routine has failed."

Did you look into the Security software possibility noted a few posts above yours? What you see there is reflective of the files we need being "held/locked" due to an ongoing scan (and consequently, the security app getting stuck and refusing to "release" these files after determining they are not problematic)

After adding the following locations as exceptions to Sentinel One, OCR is working perfectly! :D
