Following up on my previous feedback regarding the new V11 custom file dialogs, I would like to propose a critical improvement regarding network workflow. Currently, the new dialog feels like a major regression compared to the legacy system dialog when working with local network resources (NAS/File Servers).
The Issue & Regression
- No Direct Path Input: The breadcrumb list (address bar) cannot be edited, preventing users from typing a path directly.
- Lack of Network Authentication Prompt: With the legacy system dialog, if we accessed a password-protected network share, Windows would automatically prompt us to enter the username and password. In V11, the custom dialog just fails or denies access. We are forced to open Windows Explorer separately, access the folder there first to enter credentials, and then go back to PDF-XChange.
- Immediacy and Reliability: While network computer names might eventually appear after waiting, we cannot afford to wait for the network list to refresh. Typing a UNC path directly (e.g., \\server\share) is the only instantaneous and 100% reliable method.
- Network Credentials Interaction: Forcing users to pre-authenticate via Windows Explorer completely breaks the seamless experience of opening/saving files.
- Limitations of Drive Mapping: In corporate environments, mapping network drives is often restricted by IT policies or limited by available drive letters.
I managed to bypass the path input limitation by adding the UNC path via the "Places" pane, but the menu option is labeled "Local Folder". Forcing users to inject a network UNC path into a "Local" storage field feels like an unintended UI inconsistency.
Proposal
- Please make the address bar clickable/editable (similar to Windows Explorer) or provide a dedicated text field for direct path input.
- Please ensure the custom dialog correctly triggers the standard Windows network authentication prompt when accessing protected shares.
