UI Consistency: Enable "Selected" page range option for Bookmark features regardless of active pane

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

I would like to propose an improvement regarding UI consistency across the application.

Currently, when pages are selected in the Thumbnails pane and we open a tool from the Organize tab, the "Selected" option under Page Range -> Pages is always available as a choice. If the Thumbnails pane is active, "Selected" is pre-selected by default. Even if the pane is not active, "Selected" still appears among the choices alongside "All / Current / Custom," allowing users to click and select it manually.

However, the behavior is different for the following three features in the Bookmarks tab:

  • Generate Bookmarks from Page Text
  • Bookmark Every Nth Page
  • Generate Bookmarks from Highlights
  • figure2.png
For these three features, "Selected" is pre-selected only if the Thumbnails pane is active when opening the dialog. If the Thumbnails pane is not active, the "Selected" option completely disappears from the Page Range options, leaving only "All / Current / Custom." Users have no way to target their previously selected pages without closing the dialog, clicking the Thumbnails pane to make it active, and reopening the dialog.

Since users who frequently use the Organize tab tools are accustomed to targeting selected thumbnails without worrying about which pane is active, this limitation in the Bookmarks tab feels inconsistent. Given the nature of these bookmarking features, it does not seem strictly necessary for the Thumbnails pane to be active.

Allowing the "Selected" option to remain visible and selectable regardless of pane activity—just like the tools in the Organize tab—would greatly improve UI consistency and enhance the overall user experience.

I have also recorded a short video to demonstrate this behavior.

In the video, you will see that when I open the "Bookmark Every Nth Page" dialog immediately after selecting a page in the Thumbnails pane (while it is still active), the "Selected" option is visible. However, if I select a page in the Thumbnails pane, click the document viewing area to make it active, and then open the same dialog, the "Selected" option is no longer displayed.

The capture software used (ScreenToGif) displays a yellow circle around the mouse cursor when the left mouse button is clicked
and a red circle when the right mouse button is clicked, so you can tell which mouse button was clicked just by looking at the screen.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Best regards,
rakunavi
