File name underscores are clipped/invisible under specific UI conditions (Image to PDF dialog -> Icons/Thumbnails view)

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

When creating a PDF from images using the "Image to PDF" tool, underscores ( _ ) in file names are completely clipped and become invisible. This issue is highly specific to the combination of the UI view mode and the UI font settings.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Open PDF-XChange Editor and navigate to: Preferences > Customize UI.
  2. Regarding the "Common UI-Font" drop-down list, choose any standard Windows font (e.g., Tahoma, Verdana, Consolas, or Courier New), and set the font size to 9pt (default).
  3. Go to the File menu > New Document > From Images to open the "Image to PDF" dialog.
  4. Add any files that contain underscores in their file names (e.g., s_a_m_p_l_e_1.png).
  5. In the top-right corner of the file list within this dialog, change the view mode from "Details" to either "Icons" or "Thumbnails".
Actual Result:
The underscores ( _ ) in the file names completely disappear and are replaced by blank spaces. (Note: The underscores are displayed correctly when the view mode is set to "Details").

Expected Result:
The file names should be fully rendered without any clipping, and underscores should be clearly visible in all view modes (Details, Icons, and Thumbnails) regardless of the selected UI font or size.

Additional Findings on Font & Size Dependencies:
This issue is highly dependent on the chosen font type and its rendering size. While the underscore is clipped at 9pt across all tested fonts, it only reappears when the font size is increased to specific thresholds:

  • Tahoma: Reappears at 10pt and above
  • Verdana: Reappears at 10pt and above
  • Consolas: Reappears at 11pt and above
  • Courier New: Reappears at 13pt and above
  • figure.png
Because different font designs change the baseline and descender heights, these different size thresholds strongly prove that the text layout bounding box in the "Icons" and "Thumbnails" widgets is slightly too restricted, causing a pixel-level vertical clipping issue.

Workaround found:
Increasing the Common UI-Font size to the respective thresholds mentioned above (or switching the dialog view mode to "Details") makes the underscores reappear. However, this is only a temporary workaround, and a permanent fix for the UI layout bounding box would be highly appreciated.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you for your hard work on this great software.

Best regards,
rakunavi
