I have a task of batch-tagging thousands of PDF files through multiple iterations, starting with more general tags (for large groups) and gradually narrowing the focus to more specific tags (for smaller groups). Is it currently possible to supplement existing tags with new ones, rather than replace them? If not, please allow me to suggest this functionality as a feature request.• Append: leaves all existing properties unchanged, adds new properties, that not presented in document, from template.
• Merge: applies properties from template, leaves properties that not presented in document unchanged.
• Replace: removes all existing metadata from document, adds all properties from template.

The ability to supplement existing keywords with new ones from an xmp-file
Currently, when using the “Change Document Properties” module, the user has three options for using metadata from an xmp file:

Hello, Jensen Head
Either the append or Merge options should work for your needs.
I have spoken with the Dev team about updating the descriptions so this is clearer.
In practice;
1. Append - Adds only new properties. If both the document and the template contain a property with the same name, the document's value is preserved.
2. Merge - Adds new properties. If both the document and the template contain a property with the same name, the template's value overrides the document's value.
3. Replace - Removes all properties from the document and applies all properties from the template.
Based on your desire to retain the original information, 1. Append is likely what you need in most cases, while merge is the "override if there is a duplicate" version of the same property.
Is this what you were looking for?
Kind regards,

Hello, Jensen Head
Could you clarify what you mean by "tag"? Do you mean an XMP tag or just a keyword for the document?
Maybe you could provide a simple example, and we’ll try to find a solution.
