Feature Request: Option to make "highlight whole words" the default text selection mode

Post by ShengKai »

Hello,
Currently, the Highlight Text tool selects text character-by-character when clicking and dragging, and whole words only when double-clicking and dragging. I would like to request a preference/setting to invert this behavior: make whole-word selection the DEFAULT mode, and allow character-precise selection with a modifier (e.g., double-click or Ctrl+drag).
The use case: when highlighting long documents for study or review, selecting exact characters with the mouse is slow and error-prone, and I almost always want whole words. Having to double-click every time adds friction, and there is currently no way to change this in Preferences or in the tool's properties (the properties pane only covers appearance: fill color, opacity, blend mode).
Ideally this would be a global option in Edit → Preferences (e.g., "Select whole words by default in text selection tools"), so it applies to both the Select Text tool and the Highlight/Text Markup tools.
Thank you for your consideration.
Best regards,
ShengKai

Edit: Ive seen that the feature has been requested before, its a great feature for the students who need to markup regularly

For reference: viewtopic.php?t=46662&sid=93cf09f860835 ... bdbaa62dd8

It seems like a ticket for this specific feature request does not (yet) exist.

@PDF-XChange Support : can you please see with the Development Team if they are prepared to look closer to this ?

Kind regards.

Hi, Willy Van Nuffel

I asked the devs if it was considered and what the decision was. There is indeed no ticket at this juncture.
Best regards
