I have just bought a new scanner that is WIA only. It is a generation smarter than my previous TWAIN scanner so it does things like automatically recognizing page sizes, duplex (deleting blank backs), and color vs. b/w. And it OCRs, too. But I cannot use the PDF-XCE app to control what happens in the scanning process; rather, I must use the proprietary software that came with the scanner. This actually doesn't bother me too much as I am comfortable operating the scan from the on-device menu that places all scanned pages in an intermediate folder from which I can distribute the pages to their appropriate folders and files which is not vastly different from the way I was handling scanned documents anyway.

But that raises a concern. For instance, I have no idea how its OCR compares to PDF-XCE's qualitatively. It's early days, but I have not yet detected any problems. However, I am thinking I might want to run the PDF-XCE's OCR software on some (if not all) documents for consistency and quality purposes. But I do not want to create duplicative content.

Therefore, my question is: can I (or should I) purge text content produced by the proprietary software OCR and then run the PDF-XCE OCR?

P. S. Upon further investigation, it seems the app used is ABBYY FineReader. How does that compare to PDF-XCE's OCR engine?

We also make use of ABBYY Finereader, thought I cannot speak for the exact version number.

In the end this is a question you need to ask yourself however, not us. The results will likely be different for each document, sometimes the scanners inbuilt OCR may be better or worse than using our software for it. Where and when that happens is entirely in the air so I cannot offer a blanket statement on which is better.
