Linux support
Hi,
Just wondering if there is any further progress on Linux support for the viewer, as its the best I've seen. The last mention on these forums appears to be in 2005.
If not, would it be possible to add an option in Preferences to disable the preview window on the right of the dialogue box, when selecting a file to open. The reason for this is that it currently causes a problem when running PDF-XChange Viewer with Wine, see this bug report. (It also happens with release 1.0.0034).
Thanks,
Bob

To be honest, for now we have no plans to realize native support of Linux.
By the way, looks like that the problem with opening file via File menu caused by preview window into Open dialog. You can try to disable making some modifications into the registry.
Under path
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software\PDFViewer\OpenDialog\Preview
please add DWORD value Opened, and set its value to 0 (zero).

At my office we have Linux and Mac OS X as well as Windows. Since installing PDF-XChange Viewer for the Windows users the Linux and Mac users have been clamoring for something similar. On Mac OS X the native viewer application is able to provide enough functionality, but I am at a lost for the Linux users.
Why is it that XChange Viewer is able to markup PDF files when Adobe Reader can't/won't? The markup capability exists within Adobe Reader with some PDF files. If it did for all PDF files then my problem would be solved, oh well.
A Linux PDF viewer able to annotate and save PDF files would be very useful in my office.

Hi,
PDF-XChange Viewer allows you to annotate/mark-up PDF files created by any producer/tool - whereas Adobe chose to restrict this to only products created by their products or 'certificated' by Adobe - a pretty strange and obstructive move for what was supposed to be an open format.
This was 99% of the reason we embarked on development of the PDF-XChange Viewer 3 years or more ago as Adobe appeared to be attempting to restrict the format and therefore obstruct genuine use of the full feature set of the 'Open' PDF format.
I am afraid we would need some convincing that there was real commercial potential for all our PDF products before we could look at porting the Viewer (and therefore all our products) to Linux - whilst the Viewer is a free product - ultimately it has to be supported by revenue from our other products to justify its existence - as I am sure you will appreciate.

Re: Linux support
im also very sad that no linux version is planed
in linux, there is no good pdf-editing tool. I want to buys a PDF-Voewer Pro Version, but i would better with linux-Support. Live-Update doesnt work with wine and open files in linux is only possible directly in PDF-Reader. Or have some guys a solution or command für opening pdf-files per double-click?
but i have thanks to the developer. its a wunderful program u created. better than everythink i saw.

Re: Linux support
1% of a billion computer users is still a lot of users. I guess it depends on what other PDF viewers are already available for Linux and how much work is involved in making your viewer run on the Linux platform. OpenOffice and Opera produce Linux versions of their free software, so I guess there must be some benefit for them. Opera apparently has not much more than 1% of the browser market, but it is doing well as a company.

Re: Linux support
Hi,
But - how many of them will pay for a Viewer?
Not so many I'm affraid. To make the Viewer native for Linux it will require the rewrite of a lot of code (UI, IO susbsytem, memory management, thread management, font sybsytem, printers support and so on) and this will take a lot of time (we are not so familiar with programming on unix-based systems, and the Viewer is not simple, so we will require a lot of testing before getting it working).
During this time the Windows version will be almost frozen - it is impossible to work with two projects at the same time for one team, and we have no other team which can do this in reasonable time.
This is main reasons why we don't plan to make a Viewer for native linux program, at least for now. What we can do now - improve wine compatibility, where this is possible, and this we will endeavour to do.

Re: Linux support
that would be nice with better wine-support.
Perhaps the possibility to open a pdf with pdf-xchange-viewer with doubleclick on a pdf.
and the update-programm wont work with wine. it covers an update, but when you press update it freezes.
and "the hand" in the pdf has an unnice big black broder
