Re: Maximum document size
I guess that depends on how much memory you have, and whether you are just trying to open it or trying to print it. I have never yet come across a file that was too big to open. Printing has some known problems. Try a search.

Re: Maximum document size
PDF files that created using spec. version 1.4 and earlier have built-in limitation - maximum file size is 9 999 999 999 (over 9 Gb); spec. version 1.5 extend this limits. We have tested Viewer with files about 8.5 Gb size, or files wich have more than 28 000 pages - all files open and display just fine. Also there is no strict limits for page size (most PDF files do not extend over 200 x 200 inches, but Viewer support larger). Regarding printing - there may be some issues and not all files may be printed at once (this depends on file, choosen printer and printer settings). We are working to speedup printing and reduce print job size, so there may be difference in next builds.

Re: Maximum document size
Just out of curiosity, I created a really large PDF file by printing 100 copies of a 118 page book to PDF Factory printer driver.
Size on disk = 279 Mbytes
Number of pages = 11,800
The time to load it in PDF-XChange 2.0.039.2 was about 5 seconds, and about 2 seconds in Adobe Reader 9 and Foxit Reader 2.3 build 3309. PDF-XChange scrolled and zoomed the document without hesitation.
Both of the other readers were decidely "sticky" when scrolling and zooming, and Adobe Reader 9 suffered from delayed redraw of images, but both readers were still fairly usable.
Memory usage in PDF-XChange was initially 50 Mbytes. It climbed to about 234 Mbytes after scrolling and zooming for a while. On minimizing it dropped to 8 Mbytes and increased to 19 Mbytes after restoring.
Memory usage in Foxit Reader was initially 36 Mbytes. It climbed to about 65 Mbytes after scrolling around. On minimizing it dropped to 6 Mbytes and back to 27 Mbytes after restoring.
Memory usage in Adobe Reader was initially 48 Mbytes. It climbed to about 86 Mbytes after scrolling around. On minimizing it dropped to 12 Mbytes and back to 20 Mbytes after restoring. A process called AcroRdInfo32.exe was also taking about 20 Mbytes for a while.
I hope this little test answers those critics who complain about memory usage. PDF-XChange uses a lot more memory, but it is also a lot smoother when displaying PDF files. If it is not currently needed, minimising it will reduce memory use to what is a tiny amount in modern PCs.
Using more memory is good, not bad, as long as a program releases it when it is no longer needed.
