Installation of Thumbnail Viewer

Post by Bhikkhu Pesala »

Not all users may be aware of this extension. When you download the 20 Mbyte ZIP file it contains two executable files — one to install PDF-XChange Viewer, and one to install the PDF Thumbnail Preview extension for the Windows Explorer Shell.

This extension is optional, but I wonder if upgraders will notice this option if they update PDF-XChange Viewer in the usual way? I didn't notice any message, but I had already installed the extension from the beta version. Does the PDF-XChange installer make any checks to see if the shell extension is installed or offer to install it?

I installed this 3MB file but it seemed there was no remarkable change! :( I think it just added an item of "open with pdfxchane..." to the context menu of win explorer. Do you agree with me? (I could do this by a command line to add such a extension, so why such a big file!!!)

I've just installed the new version via Live Update and I can confirm (from my end at least) that there was no mention of the explorer shell at any point during the installation. Nor does it seem to have been installed; it asked me to restart my PC (as usual) but the there aren't any thumbnails displayed. No new files either.

There is no need to download the ZIP file again. The Thumbnail preview extension is contained in the update. After installing the Thumbnail preview, you must reboot, then select "Thumbnails" view in Windows Explorer. Obviously you cannot see any PDF thumbnails if you're using the Details or Icons views.

Ah. Too late, I've just done it the long way then . Either way it's installed and working just fine. And the thumbnails are visible in Icons and Details view. They appear under Details in the left hand pane of Explorer.

I've just installed Shell Extension, just out of curiosity, and there's only 'Open with...'; this seems a bit pointless, as a double-click will do the same job.
Don't seem to be any thumbnails in WE or PowerDesk Pro.

I've installed the shell extension, but cannot get it to work in Outlook 2007. Screenshot of the error attached.
Thank you.

Not immediately after, but there were no thumbnails after a few days and restarts so I uninstalled the utility.
Might have been useful, as I get some timetables with weird alphanumerical names and need to rename them; that means opening them then closing again.

Well, my local bus has a timetable PDF named MRB86-87abc-Nov2008.pdf (and that's one of the clearer titles!) that I'd rename to Bus 87 Npton-Towc Nov 2008.pdf.

If I download several (just done some for more distant places) I need to see what the title of the route is; this means opening the files, remembering the weird name of one, closing it and renaming it.

If I could see the title first I could just rename it. Sometimes PowerDesk Pro's viewer will show a PDF, but some are protected and won't show - some rail PDFs are too garbled to see or just blank.

Hi, Ivan --

I did send you the screenshot of the error I was getting from Outlook 2007 when it refuses to preview pdfs using the Xchange previewer. BTW, I use Directory OPUS as my shell in WinXP, and your previewer works beautifully there--very fast--so, presumably, the shell extension is properly installed.

Thanks for your help,
