Portable version - "open with..." menu

Post by Wamma »

Hi,

I use the portable version of the PDF viewer and I have a question/issue:
I tried opening the .pdf files by right clicking in Windows and selecting "Open
with..." (Then browsing to the .exe file...).
It doesn't work. Neither can I set it as the default app.
Is it an issue with Windows or PDF-XChange?

I'd like to use the portable version, it's much simpler for me, but it should
allow the R-click "Open with" function, like all my other non-installed
programs do.

Thanks and it's a nice program, btw!

Hi - Then you will need to manually select it as your default viewer for PDF files.

Select a PDF file and right click - then 'Open With' and locate the PDF-XChange Viewer 'exe' (PDFXCview.exe) in your system and set the option to 'Always' open with the PDF-XChange Viewer.

If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

As I mentioned briefly, that's not possible.

See:
I browse and locate the .exe, then click open but the .exe does not get added to the 'Programs' list.

When you use "Open With" command, viewer (and any other application) doens't 'register' itself into Open With list for this type of extensions - it is a job of Windows Shell. If it doesn't do this for the viewer, only one possible reason I see - the viewer is located on temporary or removable device.

OK, thanks.

The viewer is not located on a removable or temporary device.

Here's how my Programs list look like, even after I browsed and located the .exe file of PDF-XChange:

There are two Foxit readers in the list, tho. This is also wrong, as I only have one. Could this be related?
Anyway, I also tried deleting Foxit and it's still the same.

Press "Browse", find "PDFXCview.exe" on your hardrive and check " Always use the selected program to open this kind of file ", this should work

No, if I do that it stays exactly the same as in that picture + the checkmark.
So it will open and set to default to Foxit. The browsing and locating of PDFXCview.exe gets totally ignored.

Looks like windows had store wrong path to your PDF-XChange viewer into registry path (maybe it was moved).
Please check the registry

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\PDFXCview.exe
and (if exists)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\Applications\PDFXCview.exe

end remove these entries.

Aaaahhh, yes. :)

This did the trick, thanks.

I guess I should've mentioned that I was previously using the installed version.
