how to do: page display facing start left side

Post by mkengel »

I have selected "page display: facing"
every multipage pdf shows the first page on the right side
when opening, I would prefer to see the first two pages, i.e., the first page starting on the left side
how to do ?

Thank you
Michael

As far as I know there is no way to do that in PDF-XChange or Adobe Reader 7.1

"Facing pages" means that page 2-3 are facing, and page 1 is on the right.

Foxit Reader still does it the wrong way.

We can add 'customization' for two pages/two columns look, but I cannot imagine how to represent these options into UI.

There's another way that might prove better:

Offer an option to view all single pages by scrolling horizontally like a slideshow. This would allow users with wide screen monitors to view two or three pages side by side in a logical order. I would suggest showing facing pages without any gap, but with a small gap between pairs of pages — something like this view:

The new option would need a new icon on the navigation bar:

SinglePage • Contiuous • Facing • Contuous Facing • Slideshow • Installed Browsers

Good suggestion - I have a programme that shows TV schedules and the horizontal scrolling is very useful.
The scrolling would have to operate via the wheel, of course.

Agreed, but don't forget that users would need to zoom in on this slideshow view too, so scrolling with the wheel should still scroll up and down as usual. We would need a modifier such as Shift + Scrollwheel to scroll sideways, which would also be useful in other view modes for panning maps and diagrams, etc.

As long as I can work (adding memos and comments) on such a "view", that would be OK.
But I like using the arrows on the keyboard, not mouse-scrolling. A "double-click" on the right arrow to jump two pages would be OK.
Is there a reason that the first page is on the right side - apart from the resemblance to a printed book ?

Thanks

If it was on the left, there would be a gap on the right, as pages 2-3 have to be facing.

Facing pages means "Show it as it looks when printed as a book."

Theoretically, the back cover should be facing the front cover, but that might be confusing to some users. I think the current method is best.

You can find an entertaining explanation about books in this Video

Thanks for your explanation, but !!! we are in the digital age and book settings don't have meaning if you don't print it out.

Digital age doesn't mean that there isn't a real word. And you use the book analogy yourself: "Facing pages" refers to a book, there are no facing pages on a screen.
Why is it so important to have 2 pages on the first screen when you display a book with multiple pages?

Digital age IS real world.
I use the expression "facing pages" because the principle is very similar to what I need - two pages on a screen. I am not using it because I want to make reference to a book.
I have a lot of documents (not books) where the most important things are on page 1 and 2 (the abstract of the remainder document). So, I would like to see these pages (and work on them) and not page one and then page two+three.
I guess, I am not the only one with such needs.

Thank you.

Bhikkhu Pesala made a very good suggestion. But it would be so much nicer if as Ivan said there would also be an option to choose where the first page is - on the right or on the left, because even if there is going to be a horizontal scrolling "with a small gap between pairs of pages" , sometimes pairs will be chosen wrong (if first page needs to be on the right side) and pages may look weird because of gaps at wrong place. Or alternatively - horizontal scrolling with EQUAL gaps between pages won't do any harm. I myself am used to vertical scrolling though...Very eager to see some changes in the way PDF XChange viewer works with "Facing" mode...

Personally, I do not care as much about facing pages.

For me, I'd just like an option "Fit pages to zoom level" where the zoom level (like in e.g. Open Office, Word, etc.) determines how many pages are viewable.

The view could be for non facing (and maybe facing) pages.

Scrolling would just be vertical in this case.

Build 41 (not available for now) already has realized option "Show Cover Page in Facing mode".

I signed up for this forum to ask for this very feature...and happy to see it will be in build 41!

Hello,

first of all thank you for your nice program, sorry for pushing this old thread and sorry for my mediocre English as well! ;)

I have installed your reader some hours ago and would like to replace the Acrobat Reader - for that I would like to use the same settings like I had with Acrobat Reader; that would be a) display of two pages in a row, b) first page on the left (so page 1/2, 3/4 etc. are on the same level).

In the view/page layout-options I can select "Continuous - Facing", so I get two pages in a row; unfortunately the first page always starts on the right, because "show cover page in facing mode" is enabled. When I disable it, everything is fine, but as soon as I open the document again, the option is enabled again. After that, I tried to use the "Restore last used Layout and Zoom settings for pages from the Recent List when opening" and this seemed to solve the problem, but this option only works with "old" documents.

As soon as I open a fresh document, which hasn´t been opened before, I have the first page on the right again.

Is there any option to avoid, that "show cover page in facing mode" is enabled by default for new documents?

Thank you very much for an answer!

Regards
Marc

HI Marc4048,

you are correct that this is not something that can be set in the preferences. You can set 'Continuous Facing' as a default [Edit --> Preferences --> Page Display --> Default Page Layout --> Continuous - Facing] but not at present the "Show Cover page in Facing Mode"

I have made a feature request for this to be added in V3. This is not a promise to deliver the feature but a commitment to consider it for inclusion at some future date.

I'm not quite able to follow what the new behavior mentioned above would be. Would it match the request made much earlier in this same thread?

Has that request been made into a feature request? If not, please do.

Hi chillrobot,

all the contents of this thread are referenced as part of the feature request so yes this is something the team are aware of.

Is there any way that I can save this setting(continous - facing) to the file so that the setting remains intact even if it is opened in another system?
