Shell Extensions only showing icons not thumbnails
Please refer to my additions to a post: http://www.docu-track.com/forum3/viewto ... =35&t=5162.
I seem to be having problems displaying thumbnails rather than icons after I've updated to Viewer Pro after installing PDF Pro. I'm unsure if this is connected to the shell extensions always showing in 'Check for Updates', but I wanted to highlight my issue as it could get lost in the earlier post.
The previous version of the shell extensions I'd installed with the free Viewer worked fine, and there has been no change to my folder or display settings since upgrading. When I installed PDF Pro I used the 'Check for Updates' to get the most recent version of Viewer and the sheel extensions. I've also installed the new version of shell extensions (v2.0.40.7) and rebooted, but there is no change there. I've also installed, then uninstalled, then cleaned up with CCleaner, and then reinstalled the shell extensions, but that hasn't fixed it for me.
How do I get my thumbnails back?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

I seem to be having the same problem. I do not get the thumbnails as a user only as an administrator. I’m running Vista x64 with all updates installed.

Just checked -- thumbnails works as expected under administrator account and standard user under Vista x64.
Can you try manualy register shell extension dll (xcshinfo.dll) located into your installation folder (by default it is:
"c:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange Shell Extentions\x64" and "c:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange Shell Extentions\x86", or
"c:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange Viewer\viewer\x64" and "c:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange Viewer\viewer\x86" ).
You need to run regsvr32.exe xcshinfo.dll command into both x64 and x86 folders.

I've located the file you mention in C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange 4 Pro\PDF-XChange PDF Viewer\pdf-viewer\Shell Extentions\x86
Please could you describe how to "manually register shell extension dll". This is new to me. I tried by pasting "regsvr32.exe xcshinfo.dll" in to Run thinking this is what you meant, but that just gave me the error that xcshinfo.dll failed to load. So I guess that's not what you mean.
I'm running Vista 32bit.
Thanks so much for your help.

Re: Shell Extensions only showing icons not thumbnails
you need to enter into Run the following command:
Code: Select all
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange 4 Pro\PDF-XChange PDF Viewer\pdf-viewer\Shell Extentions\x86\xcshinfo.dll"PDF-XChange Co Ltd. (Project Director)

Thanks Ivan,
I Ran this in Command Prompt (as administrator) as:
C:\Windows\system32>cd\
C:\>regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange 4 Pro\PDF-XChange PDF Viewer\pdf-viewer\Shell Extentions\x86\xcshinfo.dll"
The result was a dialogue box (with 'RegSvr32' in the title bar) that said that "DllRegisterServer in C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange 4 Pro\PDF-XChange PDF Viewer\pdf-viewer\Shell Extentions\x86\xcshinfo.dll succeeded"
So I'm guessing that worked, but so far there are no thumbnails despite a reboot.
Any other ideas? Thanks so much for your time.

To see thumbnails please check the following:
1. Into Explorer window please select thumbnails view (View -> Thumbnails, or View -> Extra Large Icons).
2. Please check if showing thumbnails is enabled: Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View), and check if the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked.

Unfortunately, there's no luck with your checks. There's no 'Thumbnails' option in the View tab of Vista Explorer windows. The 'Extra Large Icons' does exacly that. The option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" in Folder Options > View is unchecked.
Nonetheless, I really appreciate your time. I'll keep checking back for a solution.

Re: Shell Extensions only showing icons not thumbnails
I need to come back to this issue. I waited for the new build of Viewer in the hope that it would resolve the issue of no thumbnails displaying, but I seem to be out of luck on this. I'm also curious why I (and maxxxcad) only seem to have the issue.
It's great to see that the issue with the shell extensions repeatedly appearing in Updates is fixed, but I'm curious beyond belief why I still have no thumbnails in any view of Explorer.
I ran Ivan's advice above again, but there is no change. There's no changes in my Folder View Options. I'm on Vista 32bit and Viewer Pro.
Any help is most appreciated.

Re: Shell Extensions only showing icons not thumbnails
Please check if sample application attached here works with PDF files.
To do this please run application with two command line arguments:
ThumbnailProvider.exe <full pdf file name> <thumbnail size>
for example,
ThumbnailProvider.exe "C:\My PDF File.pdf" 512
If ShellExt works well, you will see window with thumbnail of first page of your file.

Thanks so much for your help Ivan,
Yes it ran. Vista asked permission for it to run, but there was no confirmation or visble process after I clicked Run. I then rebooted, but unfortunately there is no change here.
I was wondering if it is something to do with trusted applications in Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, so I added the thumbnail.exe you gave me as well as the Viewer itself to that, tried again, but still no change. I had another look at the View tab in Folder options, but all is good there.
I'm stumped on this. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Will modify this test application to show any results (including error codes). It is very interest to find why it doesn't work.
For now, can you export and send me the following parts of your registry:
last two items will be present if you have installed Acrobat
and the same but with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes as root instead of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document.x (where x - is a number)

Please see attached. I have no Acrobat installed, so the zip has the 4 exports. I look forward to any news you may have.

Re: Shell Extensions only showing icons not thumbnails
As I see thumbnail provider is registered ok.
Please check attached applications:
1. ThumbnailProvider.exe - syntax for command line is
ThumbnailProvider.exe <full PDF file name with path> <size in pixel>
for example,
ThumbnailProvider.exe "c:\my pdf.pdf" 512
2. ImageFactorySample.exe
Usage:
ImageFacotrySample.exe <size> <Absolute Path to file>
size - small, medium, large, extralarge
e.g. ImageFactorySample.exe medium "c:\my pdf.pdf"
Both application will show error message when fail. Please let me know any messages you will have.

From ThumbnailProvider.exe I got the an error which read "Error in 'BindToHandler': 80004001 = Not implemented"
From ImageFactorySample.exe - No Error notification, but a small window in the top left of my screen entitled 'IShellItemImageFactory Sample' with PDF Viewer icon (not a thumbnail) in a black box on the left size and 'OK' and 'Cancel' on the right side. I clicked OK. Nothing else to report on that.

Re: Shell Extensions only showing icons not thumbnails
If you wish, I can send you debug version of shell extensions (please note it is large and slow), and you will need to use this utility (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96647.aspx) to catch all debug outputs, and send them to me. At least, I see no another way for now.

Yes, let's give this debug version a go, and see what comes up. I look forward to it. The DebugView is a new thing for me, so I'd appreciate any guidence you may have on using it.
Of course, all this is no biggy, but I'm getting more and more curious what the dickens is going on. I very much appreciate the time you're giving me, Ivan.
Thanks.
