More 4 suggestions

Post by arielfec »

First of all, I already said this in other topic, but would like to rehiterate, your program is great, as is your support for a free program. Now I have 4 suggestions that aren't of the utmost importance, but would be useful for a few users out there.

1. Centered zoom - I like to read pdf's, but almost all documents have big wide blank margins, which is good for printing but useless in a monitor. If I do a zoom in fullscreen so top-bottom margins disappear, it's much better to read, but when changing page the new page start renderized in her top-left border (not centered in screen), thus bottom-right text go outside the screen. That's the default behaviour in any reader, but I guess it's just a matter of configuration, since if you rotate page 90°, go fullscreen, zoom to disappear margins and change page, the new page starts left-right centered.

2. smooth images level - When rendering scanned pages, pdf xchange is much, much more legible than acrobat, but when comparing it to foxit, the images are a little more blurred (all 3 programs with smooth images option checked). That's make no difference for pictures, but it's noticeable in small scanned words. I don't know if this is possible, but reducing a little the blur in smoothed images would produce the best results.

3. smooth text level - Rendering pages with smooth text checked in pdf xchange is far superior than foxit, and almost equal to acrobat. The only noticeable difference is, when text get small (small font size, or lower zoom), the letters look washed, black become gray. Again I don't know of this is possible, but would be good to have an option to reduce the smoothing level, or better, making text darker.

4. cache document in memory - I know that there is an option in performance tab for system memory usage, but even giving it full memory access, with every document I throw at it, when changing pages it seems to read the page from the disk (half a second delay, but noticeable) - after that, the page is cached, if I go back to a page I already read it loads instantly. Since that doesn't happen in other readers, I guess maybe it's possible to put an option to cache the next x pages in memory, so they will load instantly when I change page.

Well, that's all, sorry for the long text, with or without these things implemented your program is overall the best pdf reader out there.

Thanks for good words :)

About your suggestions:
1. Centered zoom -- will think on this, and maybe we will add this feature in the future build.
2. smooth images level -- would be very helpful, if you can provide us with some sample PDFs.
3. smooth text level -- we already have experimental implementation of this, but this option is hidden and available only via changing registry settings manually. You can find this option into the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software\PDFViewer\PageDisplay
Add DWORD value TextGamma with value in range from 250 up to 8000. (default value is 1000).
4. cache document in memory -- will think on this.

Thank you very much, reducing the textgamma value in registry REALLY improved the text quality in my monitor.

Now for the scanned images blur, I've attached 2 sample pages of a 'scanned' magazine. If you compare, you'll see that pdf xchange render much better than acrobat but a little more blurred than Foxit. However, I've noticed that this blur only happens if page is in portrait position, rotating it 90°, little or even no blur occur, became as good (or even better) as foxit.
