How to upgrade portable version of viewer?

I can't find any help document nor forum post about how to upgrade the portable version of the viewer so that settings are preserved. Do we just overwrite the exe and resource.dat on the usb drive and leave portable.dat undisturbed?

Settings are stored in a file named settings.dat, which is not included in the distribution archive, so you can simply unpack the archive to your USB drive and overwrite all files. Please do not delete portable.dat or you will get a version which operates with the registry (not fully portable).
Summarizing - keep settings.dat and update all other files.

I am currently using a portable version of viewer on my thumb drive, and I also wish to upgrade to the pro version. But I do not see any portable pro version on the site - please advise on the way to ensure that I would be able to use the pro version on a thumb drive which does not operate with the registry.

By the way, I wish to seek an answer to a question which may be slightly off-thread. Are there pro versions eg Tools which are also portable? Sorry I did not address this in the earlier post!

You can buy a pro license and enter the info into the regular portable version. You will have pro abilities on whatever machine you mount your usb drive on.

There is no pro version for download that I know of, neither desktop-based nor portable.

Just another point for clarification - I am interested in knowing if there is a portable version of Tools or X-change Pro.

The PDF-XChange Driver cannot be portable - drivers need to be installed on a system.
PDF-Tools can be portable, but would require a redesign to add this feature - they were designed to keep settings in the registry.

Sorry to jump into an older thread...

I must be blind, but for the life of me I can't find where I would enter a PRO registration key into my portable version of PDF-Xchange Viewer (v2, build 42.1). Is this version upgradable? This is a great tool and I'd like to pay for the advanced features as long I'll still have a portable application.

Jumping into an older topic is a good thing, shows that you have used the search

And now on the topic, even in the portable viewer there is a Edit -> Preferences -> Registration window where you can input your serial number, and this will allow you to use your Viewer PRO as a portable application (with the usual portable application limitations of course).

p.s. Also make sure you are using the latest version (42.3 for now) which by the end of the day would be 42.4
