Search engines in context menu?

Post by paul1149 »

Is it possible to add search engines to the context menu, maybe in the Prov version if not the free? When I'm reading in Firefox I can highlight a word, right click, and thereby go to, say, a dictionary site or an internet search engine to research the word.

This would be a quantum leap in functionality for .pdf viewing.

Thanks,
p.

Hi,

Great idea - will see what can be done ...
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Best regards

Feature added into build 42.0

For each search provider .xml file which conform to OpenSearch specification used and can be created by the user. Also there will be simple manager for search providers.

This looks very nice. I really appreciate this feature in my browser - now it's also included in my pdf reader!

Thank you

Trying to Remove/Add New Search Provider via Edit>Preferences>Search Providers but failed...
Related to Add New Search Provider - "OK" button still remains inactive even after completing all required fields - http://tinyurl.com/nqlu4q

I use v.2.0.0042.0 beta.

win.softpedia.com uses POST method for pasting searching text. for now we support only GET method where search text is passed in URL.

Very nice, guys. To my knowledge you're the first to do this, and I think it's important, in that it integrates the viewing of .pdf files to other internet tools far more than before. This bridges a huge chasm, and brings .pdf files out of isolation, and I hope you can reap deserved marketing rewards from it.

a few observations.
  • I found the user search files under Doc&Set/app data/etc.... Class ID names are used, so there is no easy way to know which file corresponds to which search site.
  • There is no Edit function via the interface, so either remove and replace or going through the above process is the only way to fine tune existing engines.
  • I made my own Wikipedia-en engine (had some problems with the default one), but the default one would not delete. Perhaps if I delete the source file it would.
  • I made an Amazon search, and for some reason the icon was huge.
All in all a great step forward. Thank you for being so responsive!

Thanks, and please note we are supporting translation programs (like Translate It!, ABBYY Lingvo 12/X3, etc.) too ;-)

For us it is much easier to use such names of files.
There is no Edit function via the interface, so either remove and replace or going through the above process is the only way to fine tune existing engines.
It is .xml files, so, you can edit them using any editor which support UTF8 encoding.
I made my own Wikipedia-en engine (had some problems with the default one), but the default one would not delete. Perhaps if I delete the source file it would.
There are two places where search engine definitions are stored - the place under Document & settings you had found and "SearchProviders" subfolder of viewer's installation folder.
So, just remove corresponding file from this folder.
Remove button in Preferences dialog will work into build 42.1
I made an Amazon search, and for some reason the icon was huge.
Please send me this definition file.

Search not work for SECURED files. (Select text, right click, search by, provider). When right click, text properties then text and button 'copy to clipboard' is grayed out (disabled, of course) but it should not prevent searching on web.
Is it right?

Best Reagards and thank for goooood job

To be honest, I don't know what is best. A real search is almost the same as copy, so, for now it looks to see if copy permissions are allowed.

OK. I am mostly using secured pdf (product datasheets, ...). Will be good to have search ability but I can do it as before, manually

EDIT: btw. this is not your problem, some pdf producers put too many restriction on their documents. If copy is enabled then search works fine.
Maybe will be good to disable 'Search' in context menu for files with copy contents disabled or display dialog with 'Search disabled'. Now it does nothing and can be confusing for some users.
