Hello jojfrost,
Unfortunately this error does not mean much to our developers. Also it is unusual as you are the first one to report such kind of crashes.
Please give us some additional information about your OS and if you have installed any other software soon before the problems started.
Also is the error always occurring on this address, and has it happened with another application?
Also - can I suggestyou fully uninstall - restart your PC and then retry using the latest version 42.0 which you can download from here

Re: PDF-XChange has to close
I just had the same thing.
I have a file that will open in Adobe Reader, but forces Exchange Viewer to close with the "encountered an error and needs to close" message.
If you'd like the file, let me know I can send it in.

gwagner,
Sure this file would be most helpfull. If you want to attach it to the forums make sure it's zipped or it will get purged. Or you could send it to pdfxview@tracker-software.com

*Please give us some additional information about your OS and if you have installed any other software soon before the problems started.
Operating system: Windows XP SP2; no new software installed before problem started.
*is the error always occurring on this address, and has it happened with another application?
No. Most recent: pdfxcview.exe. version 2.0.41.5. fault address 0x00561923
*Error occurs when PDF-Xchange is displaying a document but no keys pressed.
More accurately I should have said that I have PDF-XChange open for long periods of time in which I am not actually using it. I leave the application to do research, e-mail, work with other applications, take prolonged breaks, and so on. When I come back to XChange, the first thing I do, such as go to the next page, move the cursor, or highlight text, causes it to pop up the message and close. But I've also had the crash without doing anything in XChange, just having it open for a long period.
As advised, I've uninstalled XChange, rebooted, and reinstalled it. I purposely left it open over night and had no problem this morning resuming use of it. So maybe the problem is solved. I had updated several times without uninstalling.
I've submitted this problem before ...

Re: PDF-XChange has to close
Foiled again. After spending some time with email, I came back to PDF-XChange and did a search on a name in the open document and got 9 hits. When I clicked one to go to that location in the file, I once again got the dreaded "has to close." I don't see a way to attach a file so I'll embed what information I could glean from the popup and the Windows Event Viewer.jojfrost wrote:*Please give us some additional information about your OS and if you have installed any other software soon before the problems started.

Re: PDF-XChange has to close
In trying to solve a problem that was occurring once every few days, I installed the latest version and came up with an intolerable situation: When I search on a term and get many hits, clicking any one of them to go to that point in the document, PDF-Xchange displays the close message. I tried numerous PDFs of varying size and searches resulting in varying number of hits. Clicking on a result where only one or two were found would work OK. I have spent so much time on this that I didn't want to take the time to find the exact number of hits that would result in failure (assuming I could do that). Instead I uninstalled PDF-XChange completely, again, and installed the previous version: 2.0 build 41.5. That version works perfectly with a large number of hits. I assume that it will still crash after it has been open for a prolonged period. Is it possible there is a connection between these two behaviors?jojfrost wrote:After spending some time with email, I came back to PDF-XChange and did a search on a name in the open document and got 9 hits. Although it seems that I'm complaining a lot, I actually think that PDF-XChange is an excellent program. Somehow it creates much better looking, more readable text than Adobe Reader 9.

Are you opening local files or from the network location?

Re: PDF-XChange has to close
Just so you know, jojfrost.. I've had something similar with the viewer erroring out. I sent in one of the files that crashed the latest version 42.1. The previous beta 42 had no such issues...jojfrost wrote:Local files.Ivan - Tracker Software wrote:Are you opening local files or from the network location?
I too uninstalled and reinstalled and spent a couple hours trying to figure out why the damn thing was crashing. I even uninstalled Xchange Pro thinking that might help. I cleaned the registry, rebooted... and started from scratch. The MSI version of the Xchange Pro installer did not work well, leaving the pdfsaver and the uninstaller modules out of the install. WTF?
Finally, after again cleaning every vestige of the Xchange software, I installed Xchange Pro from the zip, PDFX4.zip. I downloaded the viewer within the Xchange Pro setup instead of attempting to download and upgrade the viewer by itself. That seemed to work for me.. but I did find one file that killed the viewer deader than a doornail when I attempted to open it.. I sent that in by way of "report a problem" within the viewer itself.
So, there are issues here.
Edit: Found another pdf file that killed 42.1. I went back to 42.0 beta.. and all is well.

Re: PDF-XChange has to close
Cadillakin,
thank you for the file, we have found the problem and are fixing it at the moment.
As this is not a minor error we will release build 42.2 as soon as possible that will correct it (hopefully on Monday).
Regards,
Stefan

Re: PDF-XChange has to close
Seemingly, all my issues have been resolved with the new builds. No more errors. The files that were killing the viewer now work properly... Installations went smoothly.
Thank you.
Thank you.
