Startup Group: Feature Request

Post by helvib »

The new session manager is a very useful feature. But the frequent use of PDF-XChange Viewer or any other viewer limits the usefulness of this feature. Suppose you have closed the PXV and expect it to open the documents you usually work with, the next time you open it. Now in the meanwhile, you find a document that you want to view. You double click it in Windows Explorer and your last session is lost.

The solution is to have a startup group, like the startup folder in Windows or the homepage in browsers. The startup group contains the name and path of the documents which should be loaded by default when PXV is opened. Now every time, you open PXV, your default documents are opened.

This might be a little problematic in some cases. For example, you double click a document in Windows environment. You would normally want to view only that document and wouldn't want all the default documents to open.

The solution is that PXV should open just the document which it is instructed to open by Windows Explorer/Environment and in other cases to load the startup group when PXV is opened without any instructions to open any specific documents.

Hi helvib,

We appreciate your suggestion and as you mention there are a many situations that could benefit from either approach. The dev team is a busy group but will review your suggestion and time permitting consider implementing something of that nature to accommodate you request. You input is appreciated.

Regards,
Chris

What about a playlist?

Post by helvib »

The problem I mentioned in the previous post could be solved another way too, and that is a playlist. A playlist in a mediaplayer like Winamp is just a list of the files that have to be played, including path and file name.

A similar solution could be devised for PDF-XChange-Viewer by creating a new file type that contains a list of the PDF files to be opened together when the playlist is double clicked.

Obviously such a list doesn't need any special formatting, it would be just a list of the files to be opened including the full paths and file names.

This can be very helpful to people who work with lots of PDF files and
usually have to open lots of files together for each session.

As for the extension for the new file format, I suggest "PPF" standing for "PDF Playlist File". It sounds similar enough to PDF to leave no one in doubt about the nature of the file.

Hope this kind of feature can be realized when time and ressources permit.
For me its the only really missing feature within this great product.

It was asked for before:

+1 vote, it is very annoying to open a pdf file realizing your last seesion was just lost :(
I'd rather not open the pdf file at all (so that I'd be forced to open pdf-xchange and then open the file or whatever).
