Contents (Manual) is missing from Help menu and no F1

Post by kier.a »

Dear Support,

After a couple of attempts at clean installations of 2.0.42.2, it appears that I cannot summon the manual either by Help -> Contents or by pressing F1.

Please see attached pic.

The manual is available (if you search for it) as you can see from the second line in the following list of files. It just seems that the connection to the GUI is missing.

Many thanks.

It is working on my Vista 64 correctly as well. We are working hard to consolidate the installation folder structure and I had thought 42.2 was all corrected. kier.a would you be prepared to reinstall from this file: http://www.docu-track.com/download/PDFXVwer.zip and tell us the results? I am assuming here that this is after installing PDF-XChange Viewer Pro and not PDF-XChange 4 Pro (includes the viewer).

I look forward to hearing your feedback.

I had similar issues previously... when I tried to install Xchange Pro and Xchange Viewer separately. There was an issue with the Beta Viewer that made separate installations necessary. I think installing Xchange Pro and the viewer separately created some path incompatibilities...

What eventually worked for me and installed all modules and *paths* correctly was to install the Xchange Pro package that includes the viewer. Paul mentions it above. Prior to that installation method, I too was getting errors trying to use the manual, the live update and the uninstall.

My paths are setup slightly differently than yours.. I have no PDF-XChange Viewer subfolder. As to why that is.. I have no idea.. I installed into the default folder.. I assume you did too.

Here are my folders and paths to the Viewer files..

Thanks for that Cadillakin, it is useful to know.

As we move toward a final unified install structure it might be necessarry to for some users remove all traces of the old installs then run the installer again so as to avoid leaving legacy paths from old versions. Not an ideal situation I know but in time will become less and less relevant.

Hi Paul and Cadillakin,

Many thanks for the responses. Just to clarify the original post, I was installing PDF-XChange Viewer PRO on a Win XP SP3 machine and used all installation defaults followed by a reboot. Three of my colleagues have the same problem by the way.

Paul,

The new build rectifies the problem, thank you!

I installed over-the-top of the current installation with defaults and rebooted. One point though is that the manual opens in a different instance of PDF Viewer to the one in which I pressed F1, but I can't remember if that is how it worked before. I think I prefer it that way but thought I'd let you know in case that wasn't your intention.

I assume that the new build is temporary, should I uninstall it until you roll it out officially?

Kier.
I noticed that too.. A new instance of the Viewer is created for the manual despite the fact that "allow multiple instances" is unchecked in the configuration. Also, for whatever reason the launching of the manual ignores the toolbar settings that I have previously set up.. and presents me with toolbar settings that I did not configure. I noticed that behavior previously when I opened a pdf from Winzip or some other similar application. It also launched a new instance with a new toolbar configuration.

Hey All,

That F1 functions as intended, as most helps are opened in a different instance or window of whatever software you are using. As well since its a help file, it is not critical to maintain the viewer settings as in most cases it gets closed as soon as a user finds what they're seeking.

Hi again kier.a

we consider every release a stable release unless it is tagged as a beta or other. 42.2 should not be considered temporary. Having said that if a bug fix is in order we will sometimes rebuild the product without changing the version number.

The only other thing I would add would be that since some of the install paths have changed I would uninstall your existing version and remove all files in Program Files and your start menu that don't get cleaned up by the uninstaller then run the installer again. That should make sure you have nothing left over a s legacy from previous installs.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the clarification but now I'm a little bit confused....

- I installed 42.2 originally and subsequently reported the problem.

- You posted a link to what I assume is a new version on Tuesday. This fixed the problem.

- You now refer to the version I downloaded as 42.2 even though they were different downloads.

So my question is how do we distinguish between the original version and the fixed version?

Kier.

I downloaded the version from the link

Hi kier.a,

This is not a standard practice, but as there were a few bugs that were quickly fixed (yours included) we just placed the corrected file under the same version number, and the majority of users will never understand there were changes the same day, and only the few people that were vigilant enough to download the new version in the first few hours after the release and encountered the bugs will need to update with the "same build" ;) . This was the better solution for most so we chose to do it like this.

Sorry for the confusion it have caused you, and I hope the picture is a bit more clear now.

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Ah, I see now. Thanks for the clarification. I will distribute the new download to my colleagues in that case.

Thanks to all for resolving this problem.
