Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
I recently purchased Viewer PRO version 2.0.42.2 and installed it with Win XP SP3.
When I use LiveUpdate, either from Help menu or Windows -> All Programs etc., the download executes and appears to install without error. However, if I check again using LiveUpdate, it still insists that Shell Extensions 2.0.42.2 can be updated. Despite a number of attempts, I just go round and round in circles!
I don't know how to confirm whether:
(a) Shell Extensions 2.0.42.2 is installed OK and LiveUpdate is incorrectly flagging this as updateable.
OR
(b) Shell Extensions 2.0.42.2 is not installed OK and LiveUpdate is correctly flagging this as updateable.
I think it is probably case (a) since, from what I understand about Shell Extensions, I can view thumbnails of PDFs in Explorer and Xplorer2. So there's no real urgency but it would be nice to have it fixed.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
Hello kier.a,
Thanks for reporting this. If you can see thumbnails for PDF documents in explorer then the Shell extensions are installed.
As for why it is showing like an available update - the SE is now part of the default viewer installer, and there is some confusion I presume.
Will point our devs to this so they can fix it.
Regards,
Stefan

Re: Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
I'm having a similar issue: it appears that Live Update cannot detect that Shell Extensions 2.0.42.2 is already installed. Uninstalling the Shell Extensions, restarting, and re-running Live Update does not fix the problem. I believe the problem may be with the Live Update module.

Re: Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
I've had this problem with my paid-for PDFXCHANGE VIEWER PRO for some time on my A31p Thinkpad running XP Pro SP3. I download the latest LiveUpdate, now 2.0422. Why do I do this? Well, Help -> Check for updates... is grayed out, so I want to check for updates. If I go online I see that I have the latest version of 2.0422, but the Shell Extensions never have seemed to properly update, so I've just checking to see if this has been debugged yet ...
The first thing that happens is that a window pops up say I have install the correct version of Livedate, so I continue, and an older version, I think 2.0416 gets installed. Then, the update to the Shell Extensions starts getting installed. As always, this hits some problem with a windows popup saying something about improper access to memory. If I do not Cancel, but go to Debug and then exit that, the install comes back that it has been successful.
However, the Livedate neves says that this install has been successful. The Check for updates... still remains greyed out.
It's getting to the point where I'll just keeping using the old software until I think it becomes a security risk because it has not been regularly update, and then I'll uninstall it and continue using my Acrobat.

Re: Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
Hi ingber
from your post it is not clear to me if you downloaded the most recent installer from here: http://www.docu-track.com/downloads/users/ ?
There have been significant changes to the install folder sructure in ther last few builds and it is possible that even though you have updated to the latest version there could well be legacy issues from previous installs. Your mission should you choose to accept it would include uninstalling the viewer completely and checking that everything in Program Files and your Start Menu was removed. No need to go into the registry though. Once you are happy you've cleaned out the old installtion run the latest installer and I expect you will find your updates issues resolved.
Very interested to know how this goes for you.

Re: Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
Well, I went through the hassle of doing a complete uninstall, and added a registry cleaner just to be sure. I downloaded the latest fresh .zip, and installed PDFXVwerSE.exe, put in my key, etc. I then went to Help -> Check for updates... and got prompts to install the 2.0.42.2 PDF-Change PDF Shell Extensions. I jumped through all those hoops and got back a window saying I had updated successfully. I then went back to Help -> Check for updates... and guess what? I get the same damn prompts to update!? What has changed? Nothing, Nada, Zip?Paul - Tracker Supp wrote:Hi ingber

What's going on here?

P.S.:
I did this "Update" three (3) times in a row, including once with my Norton anti-virus OFF.
P.P.S.:
Yes, I did a reboot after uninstalling the previous software.

Re: Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
Hi ingber,
thanks for doing that and in particular being so thorough about it. I realize it is more than a little inconvenient to do so. Your attention to detail is most appreciated. I am sorry you are having such a problem with this. Certainly from your description there is an issue here we cannot afford to let continue.
We will definitely investigate this asap. Your patience in this matter is more than appreciated. I will contact you via this forum thread as soon as I have an update, unless perhaps you'd prefer a direct email?

Thanks for taking this seriously. I will get an email notifying me of posts on this topic. That would be best, since others also might benefit from this info.

Re: Shell Extensions Do Not Install Via Live Update
Hi, it's not working for me either. I have the paid Pro version (v.4.0165) and the same problem: the shell extension consistently needs to be updated....
It was working fine in my laptop with Vista before a downgrade to XP+SP3. But then I had an older version of PDF-XChange 4 PRO installed, i.e. viewer + shell extension + tools, in 3 separate installations. It seems the distribution was arranged in that way a few months ago, when I bought it.
So, IMHO, newer versions are getting worse, as far as compatibility and functionality are concerned... By the way, I also have the FireFox plugin issue mentioned in another thread (i.e. PDF files are not shown in a FF tab).......
