Losing customization (bars and shortcuts)

Post by urlwolf »

First, congrats on PDFviewer; font rendering has improved a lot recently; it has displaced acrobat pro for me.

However, when I restart I lose all customization (bars and shortcuts). Any idea why?
I have installed the standard version on top of the portable, maybe that matters.

Hi urlwolf,

Thanks for the kind words and we love to hear that the improvements we make are serving you well :)

Could you please specify the exact build of your viewer (you can check this in Help -> About)?
And as the portable does not write anything to the registry I doubt that this has any effect in that case.

Regards,
Stefan

I installed the v. from the download page, but I'm still getting .43? Any idea why?

Hey urlwolf,

Did you restart your computer after you installed the latest version from the download site?

I've tried the msi installer too, no dice.
I'm on windows server 2008 64. Just in case it matters.

I'm using the portable version now, all other installers having failed.
This one (42.4 portable) also forgets settings. It shows all toolbars by default, and no kb shortcuts survive between boots.

I've given it a few days a posts back and forth. I cannot waste more time on this... wake me up when you find the solution.

Problem is somewhere on your PC I think. Regular version store settings into registry, portable - into a special file. There is only one case when it is possible - when the Viewer crashes before it saves it's settings (both regular and portable, which is very strange). First suggestion is to check your PC for viruses using one (or better two different) AV scanners (even if you have AV runnig - to completely exclude this case). In case if everything is OK and this doesn't help - please try to do following:
1. Customize something and then export settings before exit. Please check resulting file (it should have non-zero size).
2. Exit the Viewer and run it again. Check if settings are restored (I suppose not).
3. Import settings from file created in step 1 and check if the settings have imported or not. If not - please provide us that file. If yes - Viewer simply crashed during exit (and before saving settings).
4. If the answer on step 3 was "yes" - please try to disable all running AV/firewall software and check again if original problem exists. This also affects all other programs, especially translators - they often integrate into other programs to make translations.
In any case please let us know the results.

I found a problem.
When I open an attached pdf in thunderbird, and pdf-xchange is already open, it does NOT open a new tab. It creates a new pdf-xchange window, and in this new window all settings are lost. The old one stays ok. Settings are kept. Not sure whether this can be changed in t-bird...

Did you allow multiple instances of the Viewer?

If you have several copies running each of them will over-ride the settings at exit, so you will get settings from the last closed copy of Viewer.

And what happens if you make a customization in the "standalone" Viewer, close it, and that open pdf in thunderbird? Is your customization present or not?

I don't have the 'allow multiple instances' option checked so it should never do this...
If close it, and open an attachment, it does NOT keep config

Could you please provide some screenshots to help us answer the following questions:
How do you open pdf-documents from Thunderbird?
Do you open attached pdfs or do you open pdfs by mouse clicking on the link-to-pdf in your email?

Thanks.

Hi,

Can you check your <PDF-XChange Viewer Install Folder>\settings.dat
This file should be without the 'Read-Only' attribute.
Also please check - do you have this file?:
<PDF-XChange Viewer Install Folder>\portable.dat

Some more info.
Problem extended to firefox.
However, in options > applications > pdf, I see two entries for pdf-Xchage. One says default, the other doesn't. If I pick the default one, I don't have my settings, but it works with settings if I pick the other one.

I hope this helps.

The files you mentioned are all in place.
It's clearly something related w/ how FF/Tbird call the exe.

Thanks

Please make copy of your settings.dat somewhere.
Now remove portable.dat file, run the viewer, and import settings (using Edit -> Import Settings from Data file) from copied settings.dat file.
Now you can remove this settings.dat (and settings.dat file from viewer's folder too).

But I'm using the portable edition (!). I think your solution would work for the standard one. I cannot get any of the installers for the standard one to work. Please read the beginning of this thread (or maybe other posts by me where I report all installers to fail?). Anyway, now all it's working so I'm not gonna touch anything :)

Hi,

If you are using the portable edition - you should not be using any 'installer' !

The protable version is just a zip file with the viewer - which should be extracted to a suitable device/folder - then the instructions Ivan has given you would make perfect sense !

The portable version can be downloaded from here :
www.tracker-software.com/PDFX_Vwr_Port.zip

This file should then be 'extracted - windows has the ability to open and extract a zip file without any extra utilitiuesfrom XP and later ...
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.
