Updating problem with Free PDF-XChange Viewer

Post by crisoco2735 »

When I click on check for updates in Version 2.0.42.4 it says no updates available.
When I check the updates in version history
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/home/pr ... er/history
it shows that versions 2.0.42.5 and 2.0.42.6 have been released.
When I click the download button at the top of the tracker web site it downloads version 2.0.42.5
I am somewhat confused as to the updating procedure as I now have 2.0.42.5 installed when it previously said that my installed version 2.0.42.4 was the latest and it now says that 2.0.42.5 is the latest when 2.0.42.6 is the latest in version history but that version has no download button for the free version that I can find.
Do you understand what I am getting at?

Yes - build 46 is up now on all but one of our servers - one is taking a long time to update due to excessive traffic.

About 10 mins and all will be correctly mirrored - thanks for your patience.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Thank you.
I have now downloaded and installed 2.0.42.6
Can I ask why when I click to check for updates in version 2.0.42.5 directly before downloading the new version it still says 'no updates are available' and yet like I said with the previous version the same message appeared then as well?
Also why does the extracted download file have the reference to PDFXVwerSE.exe?
What is the SE reference?
May I also make a suggestion that somewhere the docu-track site file refers to the version that is being downloaded (before downloading) as there is no way of telling the version until the file has been downloaded and extracted and then either viewed in FoldAlyzer or moused over to view the version.

If you have previously installed using one of our MSI (rather than .exe) installers - this would cause an issue it would appear as the MSI installer cannot register correctly the update being present in the same way - as it is an exe - we are looking into alternatives now - hopefully we can offer a suitable solution - but for now ...

With regards the versioning - the installer file names are fixed to make it easier for the several 1000's of download sites that offer our products to locate the latest build and this would be broken if we started to indicate the version in the file name - so I am afraid we cannot alter this without breaking 1000's of downlaod links to this file.

As far as I am aware I originally used the exe installer.
If I uninstall and re-install using the tracker latest download will this clear this issue?
installer file names are fixed
If it is not possible to change the file name with the name of the latest download why would it not be possible for tracker to show what the latest build is next to the download link.

Hi,

If you used the exe you should indeed see the update - so unless you ahve had installed for soem time and just continued to manually update I see no reason for this other than that provided - certainly a full uninstall/restart/install shoudl resolve once and for all as it has with all others I am aware of.

I am not sure I understand you 2nd point as the version number is listed by the download - perhaps -you could explain in more detail ?

When I first raised the issue I was downloading from the docu-track site using the link provided which was downloading the previous version. I had no way of checking this without opening the installer in FoldAlyzer to check the version number which is a rather long winded way of finding out what the version should be. I am merely suggesting that anyone clicking on the latest download link should be able to see at first glance what the version is that he / she is downloading. It caused me a great deal of wasted time because the latest version was apparently not ready at the server to download and each time I downloaded it was still the previous version.

If you are using a specific 'static' link to a file - there is no such way to make this possible - the link is to a file and unless we name the file in such a way that breaks the 1000's of fixed links download mirrors use to specify the product version - this is not possible.

However - if you go to this page :

https://www.pdf-xchange.com/downloads/users/

Version numbers and file dates etc are provided

If you use the 'Help -> Check for Updates

version numbers are provided.

I regret that is the best that is possible at this time.

Hi, after that bug with Chrome has been solved, I'm still encountering this annoyance too...
I tried both .exe and .msi packages, unistalling and reinstalling many times, but as of now the updater cannot detect the 42.7 version from 42.6.
I'm using Windows 7 x64.

You should be able to update now. Build 42.7 is on the update server.

Hi geffosk,

As discussed in another topic it is not possible for the .msi installed Viewer to auto update so if your current install is from it, you will need to download the new package and run it manually from your machine.

If you are certain the last installation was made from the .exe though please do let us know.

Regards,
Stefan

We are also working on enabling the LiveUpdate to incorporate both EXE and MSI installer types and hope to have this ready in 7-14 days.

That should remove this possibility and remove confusion - at least then if there is a problem - it should be easier to trace back.

Thanks for your patience.

@Stefan
Yes, I even tried uninstalling the whole thing and relaunching setup from the exe file, but no luck...
Maybe the update wasn't cached on your servers yet when I tried the last time from 2.0.42.6. I will try on my eeepc and see what happens.

EDIT:
On my eeepc (Windows 7 x86) it worked, on my desktop (W7 x64) it did not.

Thanks for the update - we are investigating and will advise.

I am sure its frustrating - and for us to as all seems to work well in our tests - if only Windows worked the same on all machines - life would be so much easier ...

Will come as soon as we have had a chance to try and reproduce etc ...

Just checked on a clean installed of W7 x64 (Ultimate). Had previously installed build 42.6, ran the viewer, and used Help -> Check for updates...

And I see build 42.7 available and can download and install it.

Maybe you have installed some Firewall/Av and it blocks the Liveupdate?

No, I'm using Windows Firewall and the updater said that no new updates were available...
Don't know what, I'll wait for version 42.8 to come out and try again!

Hi,
I tried and update 42.7 to 42.8 and all went fine on Win7 x64!
I just had to wait some time for the update to be detected by the updater.
