PDF Xchange viewer with Windows 7 64 bit

Post by Oldjim »

I have installed using the standard install and also the 64 bit msi file and in both cases when I close the program the CPU usage for the program goes to 50% for about 30 secs before the process closes
Startup of the program is very quick but if I attempt to start it before the process closes it just waits until it is closed even though the program is shown twice in the Task Manager
I have also tried it with my security package disabled (Kaspersky 2010)

I have also Win7 64bit and have not experienced this problem. XChange Viewer (42.7) is instantly closed like every other software and there is very little cpu usage < 1 sec.
It's apparently due to your system (installed software,...)

Hi OldJim,

We haven't seen that behaviour either on our Win7 VM we test on, opens and closes pretty snappy, I am not to Win7 savy personally but can see if anyone here has some ideas.

Regards,
Chris

I'm developing the viewer under Windows 7 x64, and never seen such behavior.

Please ensure that you are using latest version of Viewer - 2.0.42.7 at the moment. And if problem still exist with latest version - we will need more details about your system and running applications.

Thank you for the replies.
i was already using the latest version but to narrow down the problem I stopped as many services as possible using Task Manager and first paused KIS then disabled it. Non of these helped.
So I then uninstalled KIS 2010 which fixed the problem.
I then did a reinstall of KIS 2010 9.0.0.736 from a fresh download which should have been the same version as had previously installed but obviously wasn't as the problem hasn't returned - it could have been 9.0.0.736 CF2 although that isn't specified
The CPU usage of PDF Xchange viewer still jumps to about 30% on closing down but only for less than a second. This is obviously an effect of KIS on your program as it didn't jump at all when KIS wasn't installed.

Hi OldJim,

Please in the viewer use the Help->Report a Problem. This will email us extended information regarding your scenario and system state. That will give us a start.

thanks,
Chris

Thanks Jim,

I'll forward that on to Ivan and maybe you can let us know what other apps if any are running during this behaviour.

Chris

No other applications running.
I think it is definitely a Kaspersky problem but there are so many things running behind it - even when it is disabled - that is is impossible to tie it down

Hi Jim,

Could you please uninstall and restart and then install the latest release (42.8) - we believe this is now resolved.

Sorry - still get the brief burst of 40 -50% CPU activity.
It isn't a problem but I am happy to continue working on this with you.
I uninstalled rebooted both versions just to see if everything had gone before a final install.
Does this program start a service. If so I can check if closing the service first helps

No, the Viewer doesn't run any service.

Please download and try portable version of the viewer (it doesn't require installation, just unzip and run). This version doesn't require any registry entries, file associations, etc. So if it is our problem, it will allow us to localize the problem area.

Thanks.

Now running 42.9 and I get about 6 secs at about 50% CPU load on closing.
Checking the individual cores (dual core CPU) shows that the load on each core varies but both seem to take the load

On exit, the program stores settings into the registry. And looks like it causes problems with KIS. Portable version doesn't use registry.

They are not sure what was causing it but my impression is that it was trying to alter a registry entry which KIS was blocking with the self defense mechanism. On advice from the top moderator at the forum I disabled KIS self defense and closed PDF-Xchange viewer. No high CPU usage. Then re-enabled self defense and still no sign of the problem coming back.
All I can assume is that on first run of the viewer it tries to change one of the registry keys which KIS considers it's own and it was therefore blocked. Closing with self defense disabled allowed the key to be changed and presumably once changed it doesn't need to be modified again.
Thank you for your help in this matter as it allowed me to isolate the problem and find a fix.

Update
I needed to reboot my computer and the problem returned.
Disabled self protection then opened/closed Xchange viewer then enabled self protection again and fixed.

Does Kaspersky have any information about this type of behaviour with Windows 7 applications? They may have other users with the same type of problem. Thought it might be worth a look.

I have raised this on the beta forums (there was a more general problem with explorer.exe with a similar but smaller lag) and have just tested patch "b" which was released for beta testing on the 28th Nov.
I can confirm that this fixes the problem.
At present we don't know when the patch will be released for the normal user but given that everyone is reporting no problems with it I would expect it to be released fairly soon as part of the regular updates.
