New PDFX 4 Pro won't install on Crossover
I've been using the standard pdf-exchange viewer with Crossover (Wine) for sometime now, and it has been working fine. Recently I got a more recent version of Crossover and upgraded to the Pro version of pdf-exchange. To my surprise, the new version would not even install; I get an error message saying "access violation at 0000000". So I reinstalled the old standard version, and it worked as usual. It's just a bit frustrating paying more for an upgrade and ending up with something that doesn't work. Any idea on what the issue could be? Thanks!

There's no difference in the installation of the standard and the pro version.
To get the pro version, you just need to enter your license information in Edit -> Preferences, Registration
So, in any case, you should be able to use the pro features also in your already installed version.
I have no experience with Windows emulators on other operating systems.
First tip would be - if you don't need the browser plugins (and I doubt this, when you're using another operating system), you can also try the portable version (2nd from above). It doesn't require an installation.
It's only lacking the browser plugins and you can't register the file associations from within the application (which doesn't make sense for a portable application). The manual is available as a separate download - in case you need it (5th from above).
You can enter your license information as described above, to get the pro version.
If no solution fits your needs, we'll have to wait for someone from the support staff
Since there are always some great new features, I propose to give the portable solution a try.
Regards, Michael

Re: New PDFX 4 Pro won't install on Crossover
BigMike,
Thanks a lot -- I followed your suggestions and am now getting PRO functionality on my old
version of PDF-Exchange. I'm still puzzled, though, that build 47.2 doesn't install whereas the old build 41.5 has absolutely no problem. I've been using PDF-Exchange with Crossover on Ubuntu Linux and Mandriva Linux, and it doesn't have any of the problems that Adobe Acrobat Pro has.
I wasn't aware of the protable version -- will give it a try!
Thanks again.
Melanie

Re: New PDFX 4 Pro won't install on Crossover
Hi Melanie,
your're welcome.
By the way - the latest version is 42.8 at the moment - I think 47.2 was just a typo, you probably tried installing build 42.7
I can't tell you anything about changes in the installers. Just one thought - there are also different installer packages. But I don't think, that you can use MSI installer packages at all in an emulator. They depend on the Microsoft installer service...
Kind regards, Michael

Re: New PDFX 4 Pro won't install on Crossover
Hi,
The reason for the installer changes was to ensure that if common compenents like the Viewer were installed indepndantly or say in the Lite, Standard or PRO installer packages - no matter which you used - the install path would be common to remove the possibility that old items from previous installs could be left in place if an udpate rather than a full uninstall/re-install were performed.
This was not previously the case.

Re: New PDFX 4 Pro won't install on Crossover
Thank you for the more detailed information. So the error probably occurs while the installer is searching for other products installed.
I think using the portable version is probably the best thing to do in an emulator.

Perfectly -- thanks to all who responded so quickly. I might repeat the PDF-Exchange Viewer (standard or Pro) is still the only PDF viewer-editor-etc I know of that works decently on CrossOver Linux. Acrobat Pro doesn't, at least in my experience.Melanie I hope we have answered your questions,
and thanks for the help around the forums Mike.
