[report a problem] advanced search

Post by inqui »

I do like your pdf-xchange viewer very much. Because of its performance this programm is my choice for managing a huge collection of scientific pdf.

But there is an issue to mention with the pdf search. With an OCR my pdfs are readable (top layer: picture/facsimile of the document, textlayer in the background). I have to state, that in comparison to adobe reader (Version 9) the search through a pdf directory is not that effective. Although your reader is much faster, it won´t show all the hits adobe reader does. Because of that I have to switch to adobe reader, if I want to search a directory. And I have to wait...

Is there an limitation in the preferences Im not aware of?

Reader 2.0 Build 42.9
- Advanced search -> search a directory -> search subdirectories [yes]
- AMD Athlon Dual Core 4850e, 2.50 GHz, 2 GB RAM

Hi inqui,

We recently made some improvements in the search algorithms in our Viewer and are now outputting more results than Foxit and are comparable to Adobe.
The difference in the number of results is mostly because of some bookmark and title results which are in most cases pointing to parts of the document that contain the same words/phrases but this was corrected and in the last build our Viewer is also searching those areas.

Please have a look at this topic for some comparison Bhikkhu made:

If you could provide us with some of your personal results we would be glad to investigate.

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

thanks a lot for your quick answer. I read the "Bhikkhu"-Search-thread, but I am afraid my problem is not caused by title/bookmark issues.

My directory contains 429 files (565MB).

Adobe Reader 9.1.3
1 Minutes 10 Seconds
Result: 8 Documents, 39 Hits

PDF XChange Viewer 2.0 Build 42.9
0 Minutes 44 Seconds
Result: 5 Documents 11 Hits

Remarkable: the last three documents in the adobe reader result list are missing in the results of pdf xchange. (3 Documents 23 Hits). These documents are not locked or something like that.

Hi, inqui

For test: please make a new directory and copy those 3 documents there. Try to search in that directory only and please let us know the result.
If the problem remains then send us one of these documents so we could fix this problem.

If the files are not suitable for uploading to a forum - please send them to support@pdf-xchange.com with a link to this post.

Thanks.

Hi Vasyl,

here are the results:

Ive copied the 3 files and did a new search. This time pdf xchange was able to diplay hits in the result list.

Details:

[Search term "Wissensmanagement"]

Adobe Reader
File 1: 4 hits
File 2: 2 hits
File 3: 22 hits

pdf xchange
File 1: 3 hits, it was passible to scroll to the missing hit manually, I found the search term in the footnotes, i was able to copy the word out of the text layer, it was complete, not broken,
File 2: 2 hits
File 3: 20 hits, I looked up the missing:

1: Adobe finds the search term, even if the word is devided, pdf xchange does not:

Wissens-
management

2: same problem

Conclusion:
1. pdf xchange is not able to complete the advance search in the folder with all files, I dont know whats the matter!
2. pdf xchange does not match devided words (word devision).

inqui

Hi, inqui.

Many thanks for your good work!

About test result:
1. pdf-xchange is not able to complete the advance search in the folder with all files, I dont know whats the matter!
This issue will be fixed in the next build. Possible reason for this issue: your test folder contains one broken/protected document which is placed before those 3 documents(by file system order). In this case application can stop search process on this document. It is wrong behavior and will be changed in the next build.
2. pdf-xchange does not match divided words (word division).
We will add divided words matching into the next build.

Best

We are glad to hear such words from our valued "family members" Inqui.

The next build is expected somewhere next week so the search corrections discussed in this topic will be available with it.

Stefan
